Use thermal imaging/ IR to diagnose electrical problems

I bought a FLIR C5 camera a year ago. It was very expensive ($500),but the accuracy and resolution is awesome. It has opened up a whole new world of troubleshooting. I’ve found everything from dead cylinders on airplanes, bad alternator bearings , plugged heater cores , overheated relays, and...

    Run stand wiring

On my stand, I have a switched/fused power wire that I connect to the charging system. I can turn the alternator on or off separate from the ignition. I've run Chrysler, Nippondenso, and currently have a Delphi CS130D that i'm playing with. All you have to do is wire the alternator the way the...

Misfire at cruise, popping/afterfire at 3000RPM

You need to find someone who has and can read an ignition scope. It will tell you everything. The secondary ignition patterns can be displayed in different formats. the cylinders are individually displayed and can be compared to each other. Everything that effects an ignition will be displayed...

    Crimpers

You need to get the correct crimpers for the terminal and learn how to use them. There’s not a single car made with crimped and soldered connectors and there’s a reason for it.

    Using 2 alternators .....

I haven’t seen any airplanes going away from two alternators. In fact I’ve installed 5 of these backup alternators in single engine airplanes that have been converted to “glass cockpits”. I’m currently installing a Plane Power generator to alternator conversion in a Beechcraft Baron. All of my...

Anyone own a .177 rifle or BB/ pellet bore bristle/ cleaning brush?

Cut the smooth end off a torch tip cleaner and run it in and out several times, working it around in the socket. Flush the contact with cleaner. This does a nice job. And it’s not aggressive enough to remove any metal.

Alternator testing in the digital age

You can, but it’s kind of interesting seeing the diodes actually work.

Alternator testing in the digital age

You can test alternator diodes with an oscilloscope and a coil on plug inductance ignition probe. All you have to do is touch the C.O.P. probe to the back of the alternator and it will display the voltage ripple pattern. I should have inverted the pattern, but it does show a good ripple pattern...

Show us some odd ignitions from the past

These are very common on the big 6 cylinder Continental engines.

Throwing my hands up on this ignition!

It depends on the plug gap and compression. You can see it on an oscilloscope. If you open the plug gaps it takes more voltage to ionize the air and create a spark.

Throwing my hands up on this ignition!

Unfortunately ignition testing requires test equipment the average person can’t afford to buy just to locate a problem. I used to do ignition work for money and have a Mac ET975 diagnostic oscilloscope, a Uscope, and a thermal camera. That’s over $2000 dollars worth of equipment, but with it you...

What's the electrical pin type for MSD Distributor connection?

No, the Amp pins are a little over .070.

What's the electrical pin type for MSD Distributor connection?

They are Amp/Tyco mate-n-Loks. The p/n for the receptical is 1-480319-0 the plug is 1-480318-0. The pins are 60618-1. the sockets are 60617-1. Mouser and Digital-key have them.

Any tricks to working under ‘71 Duster dashboard?

I have a bunch of movers blankets I pad the floor with and sometimes remove the seat. It is a struggle no matter what you do. Cordless work lights are a big help. I've done aircraft and automotive panel work my whole life and right now the tool I find most helpful is 800 mg Ibuprofin.

    Battery draining overnight

The reason Powermaster wants you to run an 8 gage wire directly to the battery is because your ammeter and wiring was designed for 40 amps and the Powermaster alternator is claimed to put out 95. things could get ugly. Diodes in an alternator can leak and cause a large current draw.

    Arcing across coil terminals

Toolmanmike, I really love my Mac scope. I've found a lot of bad ignition parts, alternators, and fuel injectors with that thing and made a lot of money. I realize most people can't justify buying a scope, but when you have ignition problems, you need to find a shop with one and have them...

    Arcing across coil terminals

67Dart273 is correct, the problem is an open circuit in the secondary. That causes the voltage to build up until it arcs somewhere. You need to have your car tested on an ignition scope, it will show the problem instantly.

Alternator Kit for 360 drag car/front motor plate

I had an alternator on my bracket car, but it didn't work out. Idling through the pits, starting the engine several times in staging, the 11 sec. blast just wasn't enough to charge the battery. Some claim the higher voltage of the alternator will give a hotter spark, but I never saw any...

Interesting Info For EFI Guys Experiencing EMI/RFI Issues

Do you have a plug in cigar lighter USB charger? Those things use a switching regulator and the cheap ones emit all kinds of radiation. Some modern cars have had problems with them affecting the tire pressure monitor and other systems. A friend of mine who troubleshoots electrical problems for a...

    Alternators

It looks like you need to repair the butchered up wiring on your car before you replace the alternator. Your alternator has the two B+ terminals same as some Ford alternators did. There is supposed to be two wires, usually in parallel going to those terminals. Someone has tried to run one wire...

    Waterproof shrink solder connectors?

Ford motor co. recommends un-insulated crimp barrels for all wire splices. They are listed under part nos. WT-56814 for 22-18 AWG, WT-56815 for 16-18 AWG, and WT-56816 for 12-10 AWG. Raychem environmental splices also use un-insulated barrels. both of these use adhesive lined heat shrink to...

    Amp gauge shunt

I have bench tested several A body Mopar ammeters and some of them were marked +/- 40 and some were unmarked. Full scale deflection on all of them was 40 amps and they were surprisingly accurate. The old ammeters depended on current flow to create a magnetic field to move the needle, the ones...

    Alternator

I agree with 67Dart273. Unhooking the battery cable on a running car can cause a voltage spike that can blow out everything electrical on a car. Search "load dump" on Google and you can see how serious a problem it is. Modern alternators have Zener or avalanche type diodes that will absorb these...

    Fix Circuit Board or Replace?

making sense of dash cluster connector measurements

The way you are measuring resistance won't tell you anything. Many of these wires are in parallel with others or will back feed through the fuse block, so there's no telling what you're actually measuring. The easiest thing to do is turn the key to the run position and see which pin in the...

Proper use of old style hand crimpers

These are AMP PIDG crimpers. The holy grail of insulated terminal crimpers. The terminal pictured is an AMP PIDG crimp, it meets military, aviation, marine, and almost all OEM specs. The bad news is, these things are expensive and unless you are doing crimps for a living, there's no way to...

    Alternator painting

I disassemble them completely, then wash and degrease the halves. It's the only way to remove all contaminants that will affect the quality of the paint/coating. The one on the left is baked on VHT enamel and the one on the right is powder coated.
