O.k. I may have a good result. I applied 0.040" preload on my driver's side lifters and the noise has gone. The valve train is the quietest I have had. Sounds great. The sideplay was adjusted to 0.013" on all rockers and that must of helped aswell. The 0.040" preload is exactly one turn of the...

The cam is a custom job done locally here. Its very similar to the comp cams xe274 but with a bit less lift. So it is quite an aggressive ramp type cam.

The oil holes are equal distant from the mounting hole but the oiling hole with the banana groove is on the valve spring side. Saying that I added 1/4 turn so I have 1 turn preload to see what happens. Just about 0.040" preload. Regards Billy D... ************

The rockers are not bushed that is correct. After honing there is very minimal play on the shaft. I measured about 0.002 to 0.003 thou clearance no less. I a way its a good thing oil flow. It made no difference before and after anyway. But I'm glad I pulled it apart and cleaned the surfaces...

    Valve train noise

Although the engine is still all in tact, I managed to try and wobble the lifters through the inspection holes that the head has. I was looking through the holes and using each pushrod to prod the lifter to see if they move side to side. To the best of my ability they did not wobble. It was...

I took my driver's side rocker gear off to have a close look at the shaft condition and found slight galling on a couple of rockers. I didn't like what I saw! Sorry I didn't take any pics. This was the supposedly noisier side but I doubt it was the problem. Anyway I took the passenger side off...

I manged to find much wider rocker shaft hold downs. Im going to adjust side play to .010 - .015. After that Ill redo preload again to 3/4 turn. I measured some side play of up to 0.040 on some so ill do it properly. I did not realise the side play was critical. Regards Billy D... P.S. Is 0.010"...

    Valve train noise

I was just pointing out that BB's are not exactly straight and SB's are perfectly straight. So side play is not as critical. Just wondering if 0.030" side play for example would be a problem in a SB.

    Valve train noise

I just did some research and found out that the big block pushrods push on an angle up to the rockers. I never knew that. Looks like about 3/8 of an inch offset. This would push the rocker side to side. The small blocks don't have that problem from what I see. They are perfectly straight. The...

I do have some side play but I did not measure it. Its a small amount but 0.010" is quite small. I would say I may have 0.025" to 0.030". I will take covers off and recheck this. Is 0.040" preload excessive? Thats where I am with about one turn down on the adjuster. Regards Billy D...

    Valve train noise

I have checked everything. And all looks o.k. the preload on all the lifters were right on where I left them about 4 years ago. 3/4 of a turn. Some lifters were bled down because the valves were open. Thats normal. I checked the pitch of the threads on the adjusters and found that one turn is...

Bewy. You may know an old timer called Bill Laney "Max Wedge Performance" here in Sydney. My roller rockers are his first generation design which I bought in the early nineties. I had them with my 318 and now have put them on my 360 so they are pretty old rockers. Just wondering if you know...

    Valve train noise

Hi all. I am wondering whether the even rocker/valve bank is inherently a little louder than the odd bank of the engine. It doesn't seem to be one particular rocker tapping its just all collectively slightly louder than my passenger side. Is it worth pulling off rocker covers and checking the...

My 360 sounds like a sewing machine

Use a thicker oil. At least 10W40. My engine seems a little noisier (valve train that is) with 15W40 as opposed to 20w50. 20w50 seems to be the good all round oil for me hear in oz. Regards Billy D.

    oil change on my 360

What you see on my finger is the total amount gathered from the magnet not just a sample. I hope next oil change I will not see this again. I managed to get a magnetic drain plug and have left the magnet out of the filter. New filter and new 20w50 oil. We shall see. It is what it is. Regards...
