there are no simple ways to test them really. as said yank covers and inspect. If needed tear it down. I bought an 08 complete engine for 100 bucks that had a slight tick and had the #1 rod busted in half.

lol my bad guess it wasn't so goofy, went to napa and bought a 1/2" drive 15mm socket. Looks like I'll hae my engine back together sometime within the next two weeks and will have my drivetrain together soon after that.

I'm assuming your talking just running the manual steering box? yeah you should be able to just the the pump and hydroboost It would be the same system you'd just be cutting out the box.

Just a tip you probably already know, Make sure you test your pan for leaks. First time I modified a pan(adding a oil temp bung) I had a ton of air bubbles in the weld which let oil leak.
