I had a bone stock 318 a couple of years ago, I ran a holley 600 with vacuum secondaries, it was really quick and got decent mileage ( around 20 mpg on the highway) I think it was a perfect match for the 318

check your connection to the voltage regulator, one of my wires was not making the connection causing the back of my voltage regulator to melt. and alternator fried the battery

Check the rubber boot connection to you voltage regulator, mine was not making the connection with the blue wire causing my battery to overcharge
