    160-degree thermostat too cold?

My 408 has a 10.5:1 C.R. with ported "J" heads and has been detonating pretty badly on 91 octane, so I thought I'd try a cooler thermostat. I bought a 160-degree t-stat, and when I removed the old one I noticed that the engine builder had installed a 195-degree unit. What will be the effect of...

Horn on a 64 Valiant? Picture please.

"I have a 1962 valiant and it is missing the horns also. It looks like they are set up to go on the driver's side inner fenderwell. Is this the right place?" They came with two horns, a high note and a low note. They were mirror images of each other so that each one would face forward. One...

Horn on a 64 Valiant? Picture please.

"All A-body horns were mounted in that location..." Don't mean to be too picky, but that is not quite correct. The '60-'62 Valiants and Lancers had their horns mounted on the inner fenderwell, about halfway between the radiator and the cowl.

Need a little schooling on steering couplers

By the way, it turns out that Dorman has a rebuild kit for this steering coupler, and it is easier to obtain than the Mopar kit. The Dorman part no. is 425-253

Need a little schooling on steering couplers

Thanks a lot, everybody, for your suggestions. I think I have it under control; I am just going to re-use the old coupler. Everything inside looks to be in good shape. May I please ask a couple more questions, though: 1. Are the curved side of the steel blocks supposed to go toward the inside...

    People......

I'm sorry to hear about your pa-in-law, Doug, but forgive me if I play the inveterate shyster. You see, I tried to retire from being a lawyah in order to become a real person, but I just can't seem to do it. An assault is just being placed in fear of being hit, without an actual bodily impact...

Anyone know of any SBM rebuild videos?

"How To Rebuild SBM Engines" by Shepard and Taylor (HP Books) is pretty good. I use it myself, as well as their book "How to Rebuild BBM Engines" from the same publisher. But be aware that both books contain certain somewhat disconcerting errors. Nothing terribly serious, but it makes you wonder...

    Dyno testing a stock(?) 1972 440

"Pistons are .160" down from the deck" "send it out for a proper decking wouldjya?" I don't think you can deck a block .16" because it would change the deck geometry too much, so IQ52 would have to install new pistons to get a higher c.r. As always, please correct me if I'm wrong!

    steering column rebuild ?

Have you installed the steering column-to-dash clamp yet? I think a peg might stick out of that clamp which engages the slot in the steering column jacket to prevent the steering column from turning.

Need a little schooling on steering couplers

Thanks a lot for the advice, guys, I don't think I need a u-joint because the steering column and the steering box are right in line with each other. I think I just need a regular coupler, but I'd like to find one that doesn't need to be stuffed with grease because it is right next to the...

    Replacing plumbing

Easy, my experience has been that cast iron pipe will last about as long as PVC. Plastic does eventually get old, brittle and breaks. Also, cast iron is much more resistant to breakage in freezing temperatures than PVC is. The choice might depend on whether your water has a lot of dissolved...

Need a little schooling on steering couplers

When I removed the steering column on my '62 Valiant recently, the steering coupler sort of fell apart. Should I rebuild or replace it? Can anybody suggest a better replacement? Something a little more heat resistant? (It's a V8 conversion and the coupler is near the exhaust manifold.) And...

Here's what I've got on my '22 D.B. Horseless Carriage plates and a Y.O.M. plate. I'm not sure if the California DMV still issues Horseless Carriage plates or not, but if you've already got them, they let you keep them.

Steering column gaskets, brake pedal bushings?

Thanks for your suggestion, burdar. I'll tell you what I discovered. The brake pedal bushings are apparently Chrysler part no. 2467770, and appear to be available from some of the usual online Mopar parts suppliers. I can make an exact duplicate of the steering column-to-cowl gasket from...

How to remove the pedal assembly

I figured I owed everyone an update on this. I removed the paint from the underside of one of the rear brackets and looked for the spot welds, but couldn't really see them, so I didn't know where to drill them out. So much for that idea. A friend of mine, who's a professional mechanic and owns...

How to remove the pedal assembly

"I do not remember cutting anything out to remove pedals from the 62's I had." -VDart I'm not saying it is necessary to cut anything. However, unless I'm mistaken, it is necessary to drill out some spot welds on a '62. I take it that the pedal assembly's mounting studs are pressed in and not...

How to remove the pedal assembly

Thanks for your input, Bill! Sorry I assumed that all A-body cars were the same. Maybe what I said applies only to the '60-'62 models. You see, SlantSixDan and I both own '62 models (the early series cars). On our cars, there are four mounting studs pointing forward out of the front of the...

Best way to reduce compression ratio?

Ink, thanks for the info! Not to be an ingrate, but what do you think of those who say that installing a thicker head gasket decreases quench, which only leads to more detonation? Has anybody reduced their compression this way? Please give the details. Are there any other cylinder heads that I...

Best way to reduce compression ratio?

I apologize because I know I've told this story a million times. When I built my 408, 93 octane gas was available and I naively thought it would remain available, so I built the engine with 10:5.1 compression. I used forged pistons and had the reciprocating assembly balanced. The pistons are...

How to remove the pedal assembly

Does anybody else know how to do it easier, without having to remove the dashboard? If so, please feel free to correct me. I don't think it would be very practical to remove the dashboard because you would first need to remove the windshield, and that could get expensive.

'62 Valiant FSM is twice as thick as the '60-'61!

Apparently it is a combined Plymouth and Valiant FSM. I didn't realize that at first. It has no index, and it is really hard to find what you're looking for.

"The car is basically built around the swing pedal assembly...
