8.75 Sure Grip spider gears break

Thanks for the tips. I also believe that they break due to shock load when cornering over the curbs. Luckily I have now he whole winter to find a solution... :) Some video can be found for instance here:

8.75 Sure Grip spider gears break

I do double de-clutch always when shifting down, but I seems that driving over the kerbs is pretty hard for the diff. I've always had a clutch type diff in my race cars, with good results. Except with this one... Probably I'll try Truerack next if I can't find better gears for the Sure Grip...

8.75 Sure Grip spider gears break

While racing my vintage road racer Dart last weekend I broke the spider gears of the Sure Grip clutch type diff carrier again. This is already second unit within one year that breaks the similar way. The rear end is 8.75, and the ratios that I've had are 3.91 and 3.55. Car has a 273 engine and...

    Vintage road racer Dart '66

So, my racing season of this year is over now. No DNFs in any race. The end result was not too bad, as I won the Finnish championship in my class of Competition Touring cars of 1966-1971, over 1600cc. Some video from the last race at: https://youtu.be/2WhV4BIi6qo 273 and Kelsey...

    Vintage road racer Dart '66

It's no bad at all when rememebering that all suspension mounting points are as standard, and there are only sway bars added, both front and rear. T-bars are of 1.12" dia and there are adjustable Koni shocks. It's still a bit too understeering in slow corners, but a bit more caster will...

    Vintage road racer Dart '66

Last weekend at the Gellerasen circuit in Sweden. Some more stiffening to the suspension is still needed, but otherwise the car is handling pretty well.

    Vintage road racer Dart '66

I had my first race of the season last weekend, and the car felt pretty good. During the winter it got completely new engine, rear sway bar and some weight reduction. There were two races during the weekend, and I was 2nd and 1st in my class. Next race event will be in Sweden after 2 weeks.

    273, the good points

I'm not sure about the Barracuda, but for the Dart the 8.75 rear end was FIA homologated only for 1966. At the same time there came 10.5" clutch and 15 x 7" wheels. Actually my own Dart is originally a 1965 GT that I converted to 1966 specs to get these goodies.

    273, the good points

Hi, As Dave noted, I run a Dart '66 in the FIA historic races in Finland and Sweden. I got the car first time to the races last summer, and now the further development is going on. I destroyed 2 engines last summer due to oiling issues, so I built some experience on it :) My cars runs in...

    Vintage road racer Dart '66

Actually, I blew the bottom end of my race engine one week before this event due to oil starvation. That was because I used the original small sump with just some baffles added. So, I had just a couple days to make a new bottom end to it, and that was literally put together from the old parts...

Some photos of my Dart in its first race event last weekend. The suspension was still too soft, but generally it wasn't too bad. Engine failure in the 2nd race though...

    Forged pistons for 273?

Hello, I need a set of forged pistons for my vintage road racer Dart. It runs in Europe, and has FIA papaerwork, so 273 is the only allowed engine option. I just blew an engine that had Egge pistons (not beacause of the pistons though...), and now I'm making a new one. Does anyone know if...

So, summer is approaching also here by the north pole... Here's the Dart in its current livery. The first races will be in June, but I'll try to get some testing done before that.

    Vintage road racer Dart '66

Hi Dave, Thanks for the links. Yes, that's true that the FIA rules appear to be a bit more restrictive than what you are applying. For the engine basically the original homologation sheet is what's applied. All machining, pistons and camshaft are free, but adding any material to existing parts...

Just a proof that my Dart is suitable for cruising as well :D : http://www.cruisingnight.fi/index.php?view=image&format=raw&type=orig&id=50026&option=com_joomgallery&Itemid=152 PS. That Le Mons Dart is very cool. Nice contrast against those computer age things.., :D

Thanks for the comments and an interesting link for Benson's Dart. It appears that early A-bodies are not too common in road racing. Here in Finland we have two '65 Barracudas and one Valiant in the pre-66 class. One of the Barracudas is very fast, beating Facons and Mustangs frequently. Please...

    Vintage road racer Dart '66

Greetings from snowy Finland! During last few years I've been building a road racer Dart for vintage road racing. Now it's getting ready, and next summer the real action will start. So far I've mainly raced a Triumph Spitfire, so it's interesting to see how this beast will behave. The car is...

European A-body owners: where are you?

Greetings from Lahti, Finland! I have two early a-body Mopars: '65 Dart, which is still under construction to become a Historic road racer. Currently it is already mechanically according to the '66 FIA homologations (as used in Trans Am series), but externally it requires still the same...

    PV71 proportioning valve operation

I did the first test drive of my '65 Dart vintage racer project today. Otherwise everything was fine, but the brakes were heavily rear biased. Rear wheels locked long before the fronts. The car has 4-pot Kelsey Hayes discs at front and 10" drums at rear. The master cylinder is from Mancini...

    7.25" carrier shim kit?

I'm replacing the ring & pinion for my '65 Barracuda 7.25 rear end, and now I'm missing a carrier bearing shim kit for adjusting it. Does anyone know a source for them? It seems that the those kits that are readily available, are for the newer diff, that has threaded adjusters. Actually, I...

Trans-Am info for the 1966 Barracuda

On this side the pond, FIA solved the problem of originality by introducing Historic Technical Passport (HTP). This means that basically there is no requirement of any originality, as long as the car is technically according to the period specs. So for example you can convert an ordinary Ford...

Trans-Am info for the 1966 Barracuda

Hi again, This may be interesting to you as well: http://www.earlycuda.org/members/jberner.htm I bought a Barracuda ´65 from Juha last year, and we have been in frequent contact as he had a Valiant '66 historic rally car project, which is now ready.
