You can install a new seal without loosening the crank. Be careful to protect the back of the seal so that you do not shave off the raised portion of seal as you push it in. Put as much sealer as you can on the sides of the retainer and also seal it on the rear of the retainer. Its been a...

Sounds to me like a timing chain problem.

Personally I would have flywheel cut before I would pull crank. Just my 2cs worth

Did it spin real easy? It is possible to receive one with little or no grease.

Can you hear the noise if you rotate the unit bearing by hand or just when driving? Did you feel any roughness in bearing after removal?

Are you sure you have enough gas in it. The noisy pump and erratic pressure is either low fuel or sucking air in my experiences.

There is a rubber hose on that p/u some where around the sending unit.

Are you sure the rubber hose is sealing. After disturbing an old rubber hose its possible for it to suck air.

I had mine done for $900. moving the frame rails in, mini tubs, fitting the narrowed dana 60 and doing the sheet metal work. It took a little while but awesome work.
