"Lumpy" Steering on 1970 Dart Swinger

Hello, It has been a while since I last posted anything on Forabodiesonly! A lot has happened in the meantime. I last year, I dropped the steering column to replace the ignition switch and its wiring harness. When I reassembled the column, and test drove the Dart, I found that the steering...

    Oil Drain Plug....RTV!

Ok, got a chance to open up the drain plug on a lift. WOW was it tight! The lift allowed us to get it at a better angle. I never really was a fan of jack-stands for anything else other than brakes/oil changes. Upon inspection, the threads looked pretty darn good! We were all amazed, we...

Slant six over heated and now will not keep an idle.

AND! Make sure to clean all those contacts on the bulkhead connectors. Old Mopars are notorious for issues here. I'd take a light copper brush and gently remove any corrosion on both sides. Then take some dielectric grease to keep dust and moisture out. That big fat red wire was probably the...

Slant six over heated and now will not keep an idle.

Your best bet is to go to a junkyard or a "You Pull It" and see if they have a harness there. If it were any other car with a V8 then you could buy them new. They don't make a whole lot of stock wiring for the slants. You could try to make your own, or use a voltmeter to test the continuity...

And this is the reason I'm not going back to him.

    Oil Drain Plug....RTV!

I found it in my service manual, 1/2-20 tightened at 20 foot pounds. If I want to cut new threads, what size should I go to? What bolt type, and what gasket material. Many thanks!

What is the stock Oil Drain Hole and Thread Size?

    Oil Drain Plug....RTV!

Thanks guys, I'll see if I can get the technician to chase the treads at a straight angle and see if we can repair the threads before taking off the pan. What I'll do is buy the oil pan from my parts friend, keep it in reserve until the technician opens up the original way over-tightened oil...

    Oil Drain Plug....RTV!

Thanks guys for your responses. I'm pretty well pissed off at this point at him. I have a good friend of mine who has a three story barn in upstate NY full of Used and NOS Mopar parts he wants to get rid of. He's checking amongst his sixes for an oil pan that'll fit my year. I might as well...

    Oil Drain Plug....RTV!

I am just speculating. I called the mechanic who changed my oil when I was busy and he said he put RTV all over the threads. He torqued it down incredibly tight, I put my whole shoulder into it and nothing. The thing is, if I finally take the bolt out, and the threads are actually stripped...

Slant six over heated and now will not keep an idle.

Wait a minute, what amperage is your new alternator? Stock alternator was I believe 35 Amps, anything over on a stock wiring harness and you'll have all types of problems. Can you attach a picture or tell me exactly what red wire melted? Carb Repair is really simple for a one barrel...

    Oil Drain Plug....RTV!

I went to do an oil change today....jacked the car up, jackstands, belgian blocks behind the rear wheels, drop light on the Oil drain Plug and I saw RTV caked all over the bolt. This signified the previous guy who did my oil change when I was busy stripped the threads and sealed it up to mask...

Slant six over heated and now will not keep an idle.

Is your temperature gauge working? What was it reading? What was your Overheat symptom. Perhaps it was a heat soak condition, I had the same issue in my car when my slant was a daily driver. I'd go to work, and then in the afternoon the car would have a REAL hard time starting up. Nowadays...

    Steering Shaft Question

I recently replaced my ignition switch in my steering column (a real pain-in-the-*** job) and while fiddling with the lock plate, the steering shaft felt like it came out of something under the hood! I pushed it back in, but I was able to work it back out and wiggle the shaft around a bit in...

Ignition Switch, Wiring, and AMP Gauge

I totally agree! Its just hard to disconnect these female connectors from the old plastic connector. I found the tool for the smaller two red wires and the orange wire, but the larger ones dont fit in the tool. Crimping with butt connectors should be good? I have strong hands and a good...

Ignition Switch, Wiring, and AMP Gauge

OK, so I found that the standard motor products plastic connector for my ignition switch does NOT fit as well as the original connector!! Thus, when I jiggle the red wire while the car is running, the engine almost wants to die, or if the engine is off and the key is ON, the ammeter shakes...

    Carter BBS #R32 Choke Rod

I just used a brass coat hanger that I had. Easily bendable and roughly in the same diameter. The clip might be a little bit harder to find. Where it connects to the Choke Pulloff is where the clip came off and eventually the whole rod. Unlike a Holley 1920's choke pulloff rod where there is...

How do I replace ignition switch '70 Dart Swinger

Great! I always like to take things slow and check out all angles to fix it before I start diving in to things. I used Standard Motor Products US88 Ignition Switch. Just a thought, I sprayed some graphite powder all over the ignition switch cam and cylinder before putting it all back...

How do I replace ignition switch '70 Dart Swinger

Yes, I used a wheel puller to carefully pull the housing off with the bearing. The center part of the puller goes on the steering shaft (use a shim of wood to separate it) then the arms go on the housing itself. I sprayed some PB Blaster to help smooth things along and it came right out!

Ignition Switch, Wiring, and AMP Gauge

Sorry for the confusion. The starter relay under my hood is three years old. The ignition switch in my steering column is new today. That's the one I connected and jiggle the red wire to get the engine to start up, albeit apparently a shoddy connection because I am jiggling it! I'll...

Ignition Switch, Wiring, and AMP Gauge

So you assume it is the connection from the ignition switch? I wiggle the red wire and that's what manipulates the AMP gauge. The Starter Relay on my car is 3 years old, perhaps it could be bad, but I suspect the wiring connection from the starter switch has more to do with it because of me...

Ignition Switch, Wiring, and AMP Gauge

Hello FABO! I recently installed a new ignition switch in my steering column. I used Standard Motor Products Part #US88 for the new part. I had been having intermittent starting issues where I would turn the key and "CLICK"...nothing. I had previously posted about this issue and someone...

The orange wire is the shift lever indicator, I'd just like to know where the black wire goes. Thanks again!

How do I replace ignition switch '70 Dart Swinger

I figured I can use some butt connectors to tap into the new wires, its wired in series with the yellow wire and the blue wire from the harness. One question. I know the orange wire from the old harness goes where the new small black wire is in the new harness, and the two little red ones go...

How do I replace ignition switch '70 Dart Swinger

Some bad news, as I was getting ready to change out the old switch I saw the push button ignition switch I had wired in a few years ago. It was to prevent someone from just jumping in and hot wiring the car up. The solders are clean and heat wrapped well. Damn! I'm not enthusiastic about...

How do I replace ignition switch '70 Dart Swinger

I got it out! I went to Advanced Auto and bought a cheap wheel/pulley puller and it came right out! I have a book copy of the 1970 Dart Manual (Yellow Colored). The tools look pretty special. I'll have to find some punches for the roll pin. Thank you for your help!

How do I replace ignition switch '70 Dart Swinger

Great, Ill go and grab a puller. Is it OK for the splined column to come in or out a little. It moves when I try and pull on the housing. I hope I'm not messing anything up in my power steering.

How do I replace ignition switch '70 Dart Swinger

Unfortunately I was using that thread to find the answer! Should I just try and pull it out? I don't like to force anything. Would the steering shaft come out too? Thanks.

How do I replace ignition switch '70 Dart Swinger

Hello, I've recently had ignition problems where the who car just shuts off before trying to fire up the engine. I bought a new standard motor products ignition switch and I am changing it out now. I've had a hard time taking that snap ring off after the directional switch, but once I got...
