Fuel Mileage on your Hemi swap?

I have a stock 2005 5.7 in my Duster. 833od, 2.76 gears. I consistently get 22-23 mpg in town and 27-28 on the highway. That’s with mashing the accelerator occasionally.

    Is this a bad idea?

I have a '73 Duster with an 833OD, 2.76 gears and 26" tires. I recently swapped a 5.7 hemi into it and it goes like a bat outta hell. At 80 mph it's taching about 2100 rpm. Has gobs of low end torque. I'm going to swap to 3.23 gears when I put a sure-grip in it.

I guess I'll have to "go green" LOL

I work in Boulder Colorado so I drive a green vehicle.

Figured out why my Duster was so slow

Megasquirt 3. I got the kit and built it myself.

Figured out why my Duster was so slow

Here’s what my exhaust manifolds look like. I had a leak on the driver’s side because I hadn’t got a flange on quite flat. So I buzzed in a little 6011 and milled it flat. A trashed connecting rod makes a nice collar for bolting the exhaust to the manifold.

Took it out for the first real drive. WOW!

Figured out why my Duster was so slow

I didn’t take any pictures of my manifolds before I installed them. These are the best I could get. I will get better pictures at some point. The alternator pulley is something I made from scratch. It’s easy if you have access to a lathe! I have to add that I’m a butcher class machinist!

Figured out why my Duster was so slow

I forgot to add I converted small block Chevy motor mounts rather than shell out $$ for TTI mounts.

Figured out why my Duster was so slow

I had a lot more time than money so I did a lot of things myself instead of buying them. I converted the throttle body to cable operation. I made my own coil driver box. I converted the old school alternator to work with the serpentine belt. I made my own power distribution box. I made a...

Figured out why my Duster was so slow

It’s alive! Went for a couple of test drives. I can’t say enough good things about Megasquirt and the auto tune function. Still have a ton of things to do before I can really drive it.

Figured out why my Duster was so slow

This thing has been laughing at me for months but I have made some progress. It’s difficult to go out to a cold garage and roll around on the floor. Just have to keep on it.

Figured out why my Duster was so slow

Finally got the transmission in and everything lined up. Everything that could be difficult was and even easy things were tough.

    Very cool!

    Thanks M193

I was told the original engine was replaced, but I don't know when. I didn't know the transmission was swapped also.

    Thanks M193

Thanks. I never got through all the crud so I could read it!

    Thanks M193

    So is it a 198 or a 225?
  17. M

    Thanks M193

That valve cover adds at least 10 hp!

    Thanks M193

Glad you could use it! Noel

Anyone running a cable throttle body on a 5.7?

I used a 5K potentiometer and attached it to the middle gear. Thinking about using the original actuator for cruise control in the future. I’ll see if I have a picture from my testing.

Anyone running a cable throttle body on a 5.7?

I’m in the middle of the swap so it’s not connected. I test ran it on a stand. I drilled and tapped the shaft and added the external TPS potentiometer.

Anyone running a cable throttle body on a 5.7?

I modified the stock TB to use a cable. I can send a picture if you want.

cheapest way to get hemi 3g going?

I went the Megasquirt route. It’s not difficult if you have electrical experience.

Nobody’s going to confuse it with Realwing’s or Alex5280’s work, but it’s getting closer.

    [SOLD] Slant 6 & A230

Out of my '73 Duster. Not the original engine, think it's a 225 but not sure. Includes bell housing, clutch, starter, etc. Located in Berthoud CO. Pick up only. Everything for $100.

Figured out why my Duster was so slow

It was tough because I left the transmission in place so I could locate the engine. I’m making my engine mounts because I’m too cheap to spend $300 on something I can make myself plus I’m using the slant k-member, so the TTI mounts probably would need tweaking.

Figured out why my Duster was so slow

Lots of trial and error this weekend. Mostly error. Final score: Duster 1 me 0.

Figured out why my Duster was so slow

No, I notched it for pan clearance. I’m using the slant k-member so it maybe due to that.
