    Lean idle. Rich cruise.

If you are cruzing at 3k rpm I would guess you are activating the boosters unless you have blead off a lot of signal. Try crusing at at lower speed (~2K RPM) and see how your AFR reacts. You need to figure out if you are tuning the Idle circuit or main circuit or a combination. Other than the...

    Best Offster Rockers for RPM

To clarify what I was talking about in my original post- I am not talking about the ductile iron hamoligation rockers with .500 offste found on 1970 AAR/T/A 340+6... I think the only set of these avalible at the moment are $4000... I am referring to the Indy 'T/A' and Edelbrock Victor Jr set up...

    Best Offster Rockers for RPM

Ok for the sake of this discussion, let me revise my parameters. Let's discuss the best offset regardless of brand to improve the RPM head. The goal is a steetable head that could go on a ~400cid engine and make 500lbft/500hp I have stock stamped rockers for BB and SB and a set of SB...

    Best Offster Rockers for RPM

I think to achieve my goals I need about 300cfm by .550" lift. The Edelbrock intake port is pretty UGLY IMO especially with that pushrod pinch and bolt boss sticking out next to the bowl. My first impression on fixing the port is to smooth out the pinch and try to get rid of the re-expansion...

    Best Offster Rockers for RPM

I am considering moving the pushrod holes on my RPM heads to open up the pinch point. I would like to use reasonably priced, shelf rockers on this setup (Sub $1000 price point so T&D, Harland Sharp, Manton are not being considered). What offset would you recommend and why? Here are the readily...

    New heads

I have a set of brand new Edelbrocks sitting on my desk right now. I could throw them on my 318 without doing anything, but I would have several headaches to deal with: loose casing flash that could cause issues with the oiling, a raised helicoil that would cause an exhaust leak. I need to check...

Adding Bronze Bushings to Ductile Iron Rockers

Thanks for the comments. If I had a set of W5 heads sitting on my desk it might be easier to just do it. I really don't understand the lack of support for w2/w5 heads or why someone isn't making new versions of those heads or ferrous rockers to match.

Adding Bronze Bushings to Ductile Iron Rockers

Oh I'm not throwing unbushed rockers on an engine. I see enough galling elsewhere to not want it on my personal stuff. I just need to calculate if the rocker price tag plus, w5 head price, plus aggravation of dealing with the used market vs trying to get the RPMs I have to do the job I want...

Thanks, that is what I really needed to know. That gives me the budget.

Adding Bronze Bushings to Ductile Iron Rockers

Thanks for all the discussion around this. I've beed out of commission getting a tooth pulled and had not been able to check the thread. The pictures of the bushed and un bushed rockers are gold. That tells me 90% of what I needed to know. My biggest stumbling block now is cost- at $16-18 per...

Adding Bronze Bushings to Ductile Iron Rockers

Any ideas on the price for that? I'm trying to cost out buying a set that comes without adjusters as well.

Adding Bronze Bushings to Ductile Iron Rockers

Just wondering- has anyone added bronze bushings to as set of un-bushed ductile iron W2 rockers? Mostly I'm wondering if there is enough meat in the casting to ream out for bushings or if the bushed and un-bushed castings are different.

    Edelbrock Head Quality

Just to follow up on this: I did some additonal measurments and felt the porosity was too severe around the sealing ring for the gasket. I emailed Edelbrock Tech Support and showed them photos of my heads. They felt that the porosity should not have made it through their quality control and...

340 Ultrasonic Wall Measurement Sanity Check

The cast date I have written down is 6/18/67 so it's an early block. My problem is with the interbore measurements with both our blocks- they are not possible in some locations. For example on your 360, #5-#7 depth B is .246 on one cyl and .247 on the other. Together that's. 0.493 worth of...

340 Ultrasonic Wall Measurement Sanity Check

I assume you have a probe with a radius on the face then? The one that came with mine is flat and about 10mm in diameter and was probably at the limit of being able to get a good reading with the 340s bore. If I measure a flat to flat and check it with a micrometer, it's usually within .010...

340 Ultrasonic Wall Measurement Sanity Check

I measured my 340 block for wall thickness using an ultrasonic thickness tester I bought off of Amazon. It a cheap Chinese unit, but seems to work ok on cast iron. I dont have any delusions that this gauge will give my super accurate results, but it will at least give me an idea on thickness and...

Are the brass tubes stock or did you add those?

    Edelbrock Head Quality

I gave speedmaster 3 chances with other parts and all of them had major issues with quality or design. So with speedmaster I assumed I would have to treat a set of heads from them as cores out of the box... With that I chose Edelbrocks where there is a chance they might work with some minor...

    Cieaning up Edelbrock Aluminum heads?

That ridge is casting flash. It's not supposed to be there in the design, but its not hurting anything technically; its just a reminent of the casting process. I am going to get rid of all of that on my new Edelbrocks along with a lot of other post processing. Thanks for posting the pictures- I...

Stumped on No Start Condition for Weeks Now

Borrow that bore scope or a compression tester. If you were pulling hard under boost and the ignition screwed up you may have detonated your pistons, or rings, or torched some valves. Backfiring would indicate you are getting a spark when you don't want it, really slow combustion or the...

    Edelbrock Head Quality

Ok I wasn't too worried, just surprised when I saw it and was really wondering if anyone else noticed it on their heads. There are some other minor quality issues around post processing the machining on these heads I was a little surprised to see (knicks, incomplete deburring, non-cleanup etc.)...

    Edelbrock Head Quality

I just unboxed a pair of small block RPM heads and found 'peppering' on the fire deck. There is a small chance the cutter didn't clean up the cast face but wirh the consistency across the surface it looks more like inclusion porosity to me. Has anyone else noticed this on their heads?

Is this the correct book for small blocks?

I have one of Larry Sheppard's book and the one you posted originally... I use Sheppard's book constantly and highly recommend it. I think I have opened the other one a half dozen times in 10 years and honestly I dont recommend it. There is nothing in that first book you couldn't get from the FSM.

    Speedmaster Stainless Rocker Arm Bushings

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm dont have a rod hone readily available, though that is a great idea, and I have considered a hand ream from McMaster. I need to measure for sure, but the bushings seem sized for the 7/8 shaft that came with the rockers. I would be a bit worried that reaming would...

    Speedmaster Stainless Rocker Arm Bushings

I bought a set of Speedmaster stainless rockers during the black Friday sale. I knew they weren't going to be perfect OoTB (swarf, deburring etc.) but the bushings have me a little concerned. I can clearly feel, with my fingernail, the machine turning lay on the ID of bushing. This is the first...

    Secondary Metering Block Calibration

I'll have to tap out the block since the emulsions are not adjustable on this metering block. Should I swap the IFR to the lower position or does it really matter on a secondary side? SIAB size seem ok? The QFTs come with plates that are tapped for using regular main jets so it is actually a...

    Secondary Metering Block Calibration

Thought I would ask here also. I have a QFT slayer series 600cfm VS carb. I switched to a billet QTF 3 emulsion bleed metering block on the primaries, IFR moved to the bottom and the crab has been running pretty well except some light throttle stumble and rich WOT. I am considering putting...

    422 dyno fail

Maybe this is a stupid question, but did you check that the lifter oiling rings don't pop out past the top of the lifter bores or have the block bushed to deal with that? I know my 340 block could not run a HRL with .570 lift in stock form.

Do you have any more data from your dyno run? What other parameters did they log? AFR, E-temp, MAP?
