My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

On the previous block oil plate I drilled the 8 holes required and will drill this one too for future use. I’ll look at fitment with the headers as I also have a 90 degree adapter I can use.

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

When insay that I mean I’m using a high volume pump with standard pressure spring. I bought the high pressure spring but see no need to install it.

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

Her are my 1/2” pump/pickup tube mods done so far to the high volume low pressure oil pump. On my setup the heads will be oiled through #2 and 4 cam journal holes as done by factory. The crossover tube I installed will be feeding Pass. side tappet gallery and feed #1 main/rod. Supposedly slowing...

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

Yes, all holes were opened up previously. It’s a 76’ LA 360 block .030 over. I’m using Sidewinder heads so they will have stock style oiling to roller rocker arms. A vid showing the heads/port work.

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

More progress in the oil mod saga. Practice, family clip intermission, and final product in block I plan to use. Trippin out that original block was already drilled. Accurate Engine service is where I had the block bored .030 over but had no idea anything else was done.

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

Ordered those, picked up legit 1/2” and 3/8” mpt pipe taps from napa, 3/8” o.d. steel tube also from Napa, 9/16” drill bit and some pipe fittings from Home depot, then ordered a 45/64” bit off ebay. Should be good to go when it all comes in and be set for retirement on tooling. LOL I’ve now...

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

I’m having hell trying to find proper fittings and taps to build the crossover. Just Spent 30m in the back parts aisle of Autozone sifting through brake line tubing/fittings and never came up with something I could use. Been to Home depot, Lowes, and O’reilly, and Tractor Supply too. Bought...

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

Read these 2 pages. You are given 2 options to upgrade oiling system. One is restrict flow and open passages so it goes where you want it by tubing galleries....... The other is to close off #1 main gallery feed to passenger side and install crossover tube to feed #1 bearing and drivers side...

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

Just got my new 18650 pickup tube and was surprised to see it only has a 3/8" npt fitting on the inlet. I re-read this post and now see that you modified yours for the 1/2" fitting and it does not come that way. I will do the same after drilling out the pump.

My 74 block was 2.26” into the hole from bottom of block/main surface upwards.

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

Just like the difference from the 74 block to 76’. One has the valvetrain oil feed holes drilled to 1/4” and the other is over 5/16” all the way to cam.

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

I don’t plan to junk it. It sat for 20yrs under my work bench. Still contemplating a way to fill it and run dry block/wet heads in a drag situation. Got lots of other projects to keep me busy while I ponder. lol Along with lots of drilling/taping practice yet to do.

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

As you can tell I'm a rookie but next attempt I will be using a 9/32 bit or smaller to start the hole straight. Then I will step up a size. Take it slow, double and triple check. I also bought a few grinding stones to smooth the surface at the hole entrance so I can have an easier time starting...

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

Does anyone know what size restrictor would be required for mounting LA heads on a magnum block if it was constant oil feed instead of coming from the cam pulses? Kinda like what Indy uses for the Big Block external rocker shaft oil kit. Check this out. Mis-stated flow at beginning of vid...

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

Ok, I gotcha on the expansion plug behind the cam plate. By pushing the plug into the galley deeper it stops oil from going down to the main journal on that tappet galley. Oil inside the passage will be dead-headed between the inside plug and the outside plug behind the cam plate. I drilled...

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

BTW, I will use this block to practice making a crossover tube.............................. Ugh!!, I just realized I had a boned out 318 block I could have used to practice all this on before doing my 360. Doh. Ok, that's it. Once I practice making/drilling/taping the crossover tube on this...

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

The set screw and expansion plug would have worked for the #1 main to galley repair. Oil from main saddle could not go up to where the drill bit went out the side. From the factory you have an expansion plug in the end of the galley keeping it separated from the water passage at the front of the...

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

Pretty sure it will help someone in the future if they watch the vids. I've got a cam so I can stick it down through the deck and see where the hole comes out but not much that can be done now. The one guy offered the tip on making the crossover to start with small drill and work your way up in...

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

Update video. Block is trashed unless I want to fill it to the deck surface. What's the best filler to use? I've seen some Honda guys using Devcon pretty sure that would get expensive on a V8. Back burner project now.

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

I checked tonight after work on the #3 main as it drilled harder than #4, #2 and the original #1 I had drilled. I thought something was suspicious. LOL It basically did the same thing as the 2nd time I drilled #1 up to the other side galley. I got some safety wire and started fishing around...

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

I got overzealous wanting maximum 5/16 flow to all main bearings. Better to have let that one slide than this. Anyway. the expansion plug should keep water out of the galley and vise versa. I could tap the end of the galley for added strength and plug it just as I did the main feed coming up but...

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

I just did a closer inspection and felt a small amount of air coming out of the water jacket at the top of the block. So I don't have to scrap it I drove the expansion plug in the end of the galley deeper into the galley so it would take the feed out of the circuit. Then installed two more plugs...

My take on the oiling system crossover tube for the small block

Yikes!! I just drilled the opposite side Oil galley feed passage right into the water jacket. Some how my angle was off and the bit did not follow the current hole. Drill bit snapped when I was an inch from the galley target, it shot out the other side of the block.....I'm like, Uhhhh, that's...
