Impossible.... or so I thought. I changed the carb and the problem was still there! With the first carb (Holley hp 850), I leaned out all 4 corners until it would barely run, but it didn’t help. So I switched carbs and the same problem was there. But... I never took the time to really lean...

    exhaust backfire

I am first going to check voltage at idle. If normal, then I will try again to see if backfire is confined to only one side or if it is both sides. I don’t want to exaggerate, but I have had the plugs in and out roughly 240,000 times in the last 8 months. They are a little dark, but not oily. No...

Yes. But.... I am definitely going to recheck it. That’s how sure I am.

“We’re real dudes, not 80’s metrosexuals” Too funny man! Anyways, carb is Edelbrock 800 thunder AVS. It had a holley 850 hp on it that I switched out in my troubleshooting. But that did not fix the problem. I think carb is unlikely to be the cause.

Excellent idea! I have a points distributor too.

I will try to upload some pics. They won’t be useful for troubleshooting but may be fun to check out.

Rus Rusty-I love this! A little good-natured ball busting really makes me feel like I belong. Seriously, I am really impressed by the enthusiasm of this group. I apologize that my posts have been brief and infrequent over the last several days. I have been working way too much but hope to make...

Part number is not 685. No digital display on box. Looks like an MSD box. I don’t think it’s a pig rich at idle. I have turned the idle screws so lean that it will barely run yet the problem persists. I have switched carburetors and the same problem persists. I initially thought maybe it was a...

    exhaust backfire

That’s a really good thought, but my understanding is that with an iron block and aluminum heads, valve lash will open up slightly as the engine warms up. If I’ve got this confused, please correct me.

Hey guys- you have asked a lot of questions that I haven’t answered yet. I’ve been working too much the past 24 hours. Still stuck at work now, but I can look up those cam specs and backlash tomorrow. I am running an Edelbrock performer RPM intake manifold

That does help. Thanks. For the record, I do have an H pipe exhaust. Also, I checked the valve lash on the passenger side today and thankfully it is spot on. So I am glad to know that I don’t have a wiped out lobe on the cam.

    exhaust backfire

Thanks everyone- Only a few hours after my post and now I already have some things to look into! Halifax- I like your idea of checking ignition with an oscilloscope. I will look into that. Inertia- It never pops on decel or going down hills. It always backfires at idle. Also, when I...

    exhaust backfire

Hi fellas- I hope someone can help me here, as I've been fighting this problem for a year! I have a 71 Dart with 383 ->489 Source stroker kit, 10:1 compression, Hughes solid lifter cam, 2" tti headers, holley HP 850 carb, stealth heads, Mallory ignition box and coil, etc. I have a really loud...

11:1 too high for pump gas?

Thanks for the advice everyone. Looks like 11 to 1 is totally doable, but you better have everything tuned in perfect. Since this is a streetcar, I like the idea of having a margin for safety before things start detonating. I think I will do as I did with the last build, leaving the...

11:1 too high for pump gas?

Vehicle weight is around 3200 Vehicle weight is around 3200 pounds. Camshaft will be chosen after compression ratio is decided upon. I will use a solid lifter cam. 355 rear gears. I posted this same question 10 years ago when I first built the motor and was trying to decide between flat...

11:1 too high for pump gas?

Hello all Let me start by saying thanks for all the advice on my previous posts. Much appreciated! The question today is when I reassemble my .030" over 383 based 489 stroker, should I put it together with the dished pistons that I already have for a 9.8 to 1 compression ratio using .039" gasket...

    main cap walk

I'm using 440 source's off brand fluid damper. The crank is the one part that I'm not really worried about. I think that piece can handle a lot more power than what my engine is throwing at it.

    main cap walk

Thanks man. That makes me feel better. Your post also reminded me of one piece of information I neglected to include. The main caps were definitely all still tight in their registers, which I suppose is a good sign.

    main cap walk

I recently tore down my 383 --> 489 stroker and found evidence of cap walk on every main cap. For that engine, I had the crankshaft gun drilled to lighten it up. Engine was probably just shy of 500 hp. The block was line honed before the build. It was a 440 source stroker kit, balanced by...

yet another cam thread for stroker

Thanks for the info guys! A car that sounds fast but really is slow would definitely be a problem! I sure don't want to fall into that novice mistake of overcamming an engine. I will be taking my block to the machine shop this week to see if I can get away with just a hone or if it needs to be...
