    Burning oil

I have done both, several times. The compression test did give some concern for #5 and #8, but nothing to where I wanted to tear into the engine. Leak down was pretty even between all cylinders if I recall correctly.

    Burning oil

I disconnected the pcv and all of that stuff when it did this the first time. Didn't really affect anything.

    And nothing on cold start

    Burning oil

I originally thought it was that, the heads probably have close to 200,000 miles, but valves and valve seals are new. I put trans fluid in the oil first time around to try to swell the seals and it didn't seem to do anything. But maybe it just took a little while? The biggest thing with that is...

    Burning oil

I didn't think it had anything to do with the oil change until it started again today and realized I had just changed the oil, just like before. Could be completely unrelated but that's the only additional variable to how I've been treating it since. I've driven it long and hard without...

    Burning oil

Rings were seated during initial break-in, oil changed and GP-1 oil added. Great for the first 500 mile break-in Did the first oil change, drove hard, started smoking. Smoked slightly for a few weeks and then stopped. Drove many miles, was hard on it, no problems. Did the second oil change at...

    Burning oil

I agree with that, but are you sure it'd be rings with it starting and stopping and starting again? I'm still trying to figure it out I guess. It ran perfect for over a month, 1,500 miles probably. I'm stumped on what else it could be though. Guides wouldn't un-wear themselves, maybe seals could...

    Burning oil

It's been a little over a month of no smoke and it's started back again.... During this time I've driven the car a lot, including 700 interstate miles in one day. With my 3.55 gearing I cruised most of it at 3000rpm/65mph. No issues. I recently installed a locker and new rear leafs, so today I...

    8.25 carrier wear

I coated the bearings with high viscous lubricant, new crush sleeve, torqued the nut to 12 in/lbs for turning torque (old pinion bearings). I made some tools a few years back to do help with this. New bearings on the carrier, preloaded to have 0.007" of play. Didn't have to mess with the shims...

    8.25 carrier wear

Will do! I took a lot of time making sure the pinion bearings were as clean as possible yesterday, I'll quadruple check everything before final assembly.

    8.25 carrier wear

I know it's not the perfect way of doing it, but like I said I'm planning on replacing the whole rear end within the next year or two, so I'm just looking to get it back together and driving. That's a good point, I had a 7.25 that lost some teeth on the ring gear and locked everything up. It...

    8.25 carrier wear

I mean it sorta makes sense to me with it having way less rotating parts than spider gears or a posi but it's not together yet, just double checking and seeing what everyone else's opinions were.

    8.25 carrier wear

I ended up haveing a new crush sleeve and carrier bearings, AutoZone had a pinion seal. Made sure every was clean and nothing was in the pinion bearing cages and set it all back up, resetting the preload and everything. So should the carrier be okay to throw a locker on with the wear? It...

    8.25 carrier wear

I wouldn't have ever thought to look there, I just assumed it would've stayed in the bottom of the case lol

    8.25 carrier wear

Welp, went ahead and pulled the pinion, glad I did. Bearings are still looking good though.

    8.25 carrier wear

Went ahead and pulled the carrier. Bearings look good to me, nothing besides some discoloration. Is it worth it to pull the pinion?

    8.25 carrier wear

I went through it a couple of years ago, put in a set of 3.55's (from a Jeep) and replaced all of the bearings. It's behind a hot 360/904, probably 350hp. It's been abused, a few 2nd and 3rd gear one wheel burnouts over the last few years. I got everything cleaned out this morning, the ring and...

    8.25 carrier wear

The spider gears in my 8.25 lost several teeth a few days ago. Upon disassembly, it looks like there was damage beforehand- the pin had some pretty extreme wear and the splined axle gears took some effort to pull out of the carrier. It took several hours of hammering to get the pin itself out...

Not yet, I was going to borrow my buddies GoPro and stick it under the car. Still probably will just to be sure.

    Burning oil

I've been driving the car every day for over a week and it's seemed to have possibly stopped. I haven't noticed anything lately and can make it through one of these 2 mile long drive thru lines without seeing anything. It's very strange and I'll keep an eye out for it still, but whatever was...

    ICON 9976 with Magnum Heads?

Custom ground roller cam from Comp. The fastest was 13.0 in the quarter, on 93, but blew a ringland the next pass. The KB107's I have are notorious for that and I definitely didn't have them gapped to the proper spec. Rebuilt over the winter and hope to run again soon. Open diff, 255 street...

    ICON 9976 with Magnum Heads?

I'm running magnum heads on ~10.8-11:1 360, cam specs @0.50 are 224/230. Definitely have to pay attention to the tune, but timing cranked down to 30* total it runs great on 93. Kicks the tires loose on demand, 11/12 mpg on the highway, throw in higher octane and crank the timing back up at the...

    Burning oil

Thanks for the remind, it needed a top-off. Both the master cylinder and booster were replaced last spring. No external leaks and vacuum hose is dry. I'm assuming you're thinking it's pulling brake fluid from the booster somehow?

    Burning oil

Not yet, but that's the plan eventually :D The first time it went together was the first time I'd ever put an engine together. Gapped the rings to the bare minimum that kb recommended, if that. I don't remember exactly, but it wasn't much and I'm surprised it lasted as long as it had. Since I...

    Burning oil

I remembered today when I tore down for the rebuild, cylinders 2 and 7 also had broken top rings (besides #3 that blew the ringland) the ring gap was way too tight and lasted through two years of pretty hard abuse and bad tuning while I figured out this hot rodding stuff on my own. I definitely...

    Burning oil

I didn't think about the oil thinning at temp So two possible explanations: 1. Rings. Possible detonation damaged rings/bore. Explains result of compression test. And suddenness of symptoms. 2. Valve seals/guides. Heads probably have 200,000 miles, possibly original guides. I got them at...

    Burning oil

It's possible it detonated, I don't remember noticing but I also I had the cutouts open to show off to all the Miata's that were there, so it was a little hard to hear. I was looking at the piston that blew apart last fall and saw this: The top had pushed down into the ring groove. I guess if...

    Burning oil

I tried to cover everything in my first post on the thread. I spent a month hoping it was either of those, because that would be a fairly simple fix. Just upgrade to a set of aluminum heads. But I'm fairly confident I've tried everything to rule those out. If it was seals/guides, wouldn't it do...
