Can a small block timing chain jump a tooth?

I am thinking this is what happened - somehow the distributor shaft jumped a tooth from the cam. It doesn't have a bronze gear, but it does have the brass insert for the dist./pump shaft. The gear at the end of the camshaft looks a bit worn, not broken.

Can a small block timing chain jump a tooth?

no, it is a simple hydraulic flat tappet setup. It does have the 273 adjustable rockers.

Can a small block timing chain jump a tooth?

The mystery deepens... just open the timing cover and everything looks good there. No sloppy chain, the motor is in timing. Next suspects are the teeth on the camshaft or the distributor shaft.

Can a small block timing chain jump a tooth?

Do you guys install chain tensioner on a LA block? I see them out there for magnums... are they the same?

Can a small block timing chain jump a tooth?

Thanks, just did the test. It has slack quite a bit. I guess the mystery is solved. The crank pulley moved >15* before the dist. rotor started to move when I went in the opposite direction....

Can a small block timing chain jump a tooth?

Thank you everybody. The engine run well for few years (summer driving) with a small tick. I always suspected it was something with the chain because the valve train was checked and re-checked. It is an aftermarket single row chain, not nylon.... I'll pull the timing cover this week and see...

Can a small block timing chain jump a tooth?

I have a low compression 340 in my 65 Dart. All of a sudden I had an engine surge, the engine kept running, I shut id down and would not start again. I checked everything on the outside and all seem fine, nothing obviously wrong. Then I put a timing light on it and start playing with the...

    Mystery shudder

Thank you guys, I think I solved the mystery..... Bad miss-fire on one or more cylinders. I changed the HEI module and went for a ride around the block. Same shuddering and bogging. Then when I came back home, I didn't turn the light on in the garage and open the hood. Looking careful at the...

I am thinking is the TC too..... wonder if one can install a standard 904 non-lockup TC in a lockup transmission?
  11. ChrisRom

    Mystery shudder

It is the early 904 with lockup and it engages automatically. It has a hydraulic circuit built in the transmission and I think is a function of fluid pressure. The TC is standard stall that came with cars in the mid 70's with this type of transmission.

I have a 3/8" aluminum plate on the firewall where I installed the HEI module. I'll try to change it with a spare one and see if that will improve anything. It may be the HEI thing....

    Mystery shudder

Don't know if this is a transmission or engine problem, so I am sorry if this is posted in the wrong group. I have a 65 Dart, originally came with a slant 6 but I did a swap to a 340 I had laying in my garage from an earlier project. So it is a 340 SB from a 73 Challenger, stock cam, Edelbrock...

    1965 Dart

I wanted initially to install a 727 behind the 340. It didn't fit right, not enough space. So I installed a A999 from an early 80's van. It has better first gear and lockup TQ. In the rear I did a 8 1/4 with 2:94 gears. I also have some 3:55 gears for it but for what we need the car (cruising)...

    1965 Dart

Just finished mine couple weeks ago. Still chasing some gremlins. Swapped the /6 for a 340. Whish I had the 4 speed. Painted in my garage, my first paint job ever.... Let me know if you have specific questions about the car.

    A999 Transmission mated to a 73 340 motor

It vibrates in park/neutral, anytime the engine runs. I am thinking either balance, engine mounts, transmission mount.... hopefully nothing else more "major". Also, this car was never meant to have a big engine in it. It is a small mid 60's car. Maybe it is just shaking from the torque of the...

    A999 Transmission mated to a 73 340 motor

Thank you. I had the rubbing against the starter when I first installed the transmission. I put couple of washers between the bellhousing and the starter bolts. The starter still engages abut there is no more rubbing. This is a cruiser for my wife. I don't think the engine will ever see...

    A999 Transmission mated to a 73 340 motor

Hello, I have a 65 Dart and I swapped the /6 in for a 340 motor I had in my garage from an earlier project. The 340 is a low compression '73 externally balanced. It has the proper balancer up front. I installed an A999 behind it with neutral TQ and a B&M flexplate for a 340. This flexplate is...

[FOR TRADE] Trade Holley Brawler for Edelbrock/AVS carb

I have a 770cfm Holley Brawler carb, like new, barely used. It is 2-3 yo, vacuum secondaries. I need something smaller for a 318 engine. I prefer a direct trade for an Edelbrock 1806 or AVS 650cfm also in good condition. Let me know what you have.

    340 heads or gasket leaking?

The strange thing is that only happens on one side, and when its hot.

    340 heads or gasket leaking?

Headers. It is not using coolant to my knowledge. I didn't have to add any coolant this year, since May. It looks at the same level in the radiator.

    340 heads or gasket leaking?

Thank you guys. The strange thing is that it happens when the engine is hot and only on one side (driver side). It is not a lot. Ignore the white stuff on the concrete - it is just black water, one side only. I am going to do a leak down test and see if I can pinpoint a leaky valve or small...

    340 heads or gasket leaking?

Hello, I have a 73 340 installed in my 65 dart. It is a low compression motor .030 rebuilt with headers, airgap intake and a 242/248 cam. The heads are from an earlier 340 with 2.02 intake valves and little porting (got a good deal on them). I did a compression test and all the cylinders are...

Early A Body slant 6 to 340 engine mounts

Since this Schumacher guys are still out of business it seems, I am trying to see if I can fabricate some engine mounts myself. 7 1/4 rear end axles

I may be able to get a 8 1/4 rear end. Do you guys know if the back plates and 10" drum brakes will fit from the 7 1/4 to the 8 1/4 housing? The axle I found does not have the drum brakes.
