Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

My '71 motor which is standard bore and hasn't been decked as far as I can tell had the pistons at .023"-0.34" above deck, so I think you recall correctly. Some of that variation is in the factory machining of the pistons, rods, and block as well as the regound crank it has. I was planning on...

    I THINK I KILLED THE 340

Out of curiosity, are your above deck measurements in line with the pin, or worst case tilt at top or bottom of the piston? There isn’t a huge difference, especially on fresh bores but I think I saw a few thou on my worn bores

    I THINK I KILLED THE 340

The '71 340 in my car has been rebuilt but is still standard bore (with a little wear) and I assume standard deck height. I found my pistons are above deck .025-.033" but pretty consistent on each bank. I wanted to put a set of small chamber aluminum heads on but going from J-heads to aluminum...

Adding Bronze Bushings to Ductile Iron Rockers

The bushings are bronze, which is a surprisingly tough and strong metal equal to or exceeding cast iron in some properties. So it's not like you are simply boring a bigger hole and thinning the walls out weakening the system. The bushing has inherent strength as well. As mentioned using...

    340 rear main cap

I replied in your other thread but I would strongly suggest repairing that cap if possible or you will need to line bore and hone, I think. Cap could be welded or maybe a timesert thread insert would work. Might be able overbore the hole and fit a machined bushing

[WANTED] 340 rear main seal cap

I can’t help with sourcing the cap but if you do the block will need to be lined bored and honed with the new cap. Not cheap. You be miles ahead if you can find someone to repair your original cap without warping, if possible. Good luck. Edit. If you do replace it, a 318 cap will work. Pretty...

2017 ram 2500 broken manifold bolts

I replaced the bolts and steel gasket with factory parts myself. They quoted $275 to do it so I said no, just sell me the parts. I think the gasket and two bolts came to $60  but I took them anyway. One bolt sheared but I got it out with some heat. Took ten minutes. They also quoted the...

2017 ram 2500 broken manifold bolts

I've got a 2020 Ram with 5.7 with 62k and took it in last year at 59k for an exhaust leak. I knew there was a leak in front of the muffler but thought it was also one at the driver side manifold. My nephew just had his gaskets replaced so I was nervous about it. They claimed that the...

M1 Tunnel Ram Top Plenum Volume Reduction with Photos

Small top I think. Haven't looked at it in a while but I'd say it is smaller in volume than the one in this thread before he cut it. Edit... I may have misspoke. Could be a TR5. I think this is a pic of it before I picked it up but its stashed in the attic at the moment.

M1 Tunnel Ram Top Plenum Volume Reduction with Photos

I need to look into the math on the plenum before I start playing with the TR1 I have for my 340. Nice job. The cutoff disc obviously worked, but I think for jobs like this a slitting saw is the optimum tool to use. Good slitting saws get pretty expensive so I've been using various diameter...

How often do you drain your air compressor?

I’ve got an automatic drain off Amazon but it goes off every hour at its longest setting. Way too often. I’m going to plug it into one of those mechanical timers and do it once a day. That should be enough with the after cooler I have plumbed in between the compressor and tank.

    Guns, Dogs and Blades QnA

I'll let you know how it works when it gets here next week. I wanted the aluminum one with the detent that you push them through but it's almost $40. I'll make one at some point, I can't help myself. I made a .223 chamber reamer from scratch, just to say I did and to learn a few things. Not...

That's a good price and definite time saver. I have a copy of the Giraurd trimmer that I made that makes short work of trimming, so with the saw and jig it shouldn't be too painful to blow through them. Keeps me out of the bars for a while too.

    Phase converter going in

I don't see a problem with running multiple machines with your compressor on that converter, but I've been wrong before. An electronic soft start would help. Only one way to find out.. I run my garage on a 5hp rotary that I built myself and got the leg balance dialed in pretty tight with the...

    Guns, Dogs and Blades QnA

When I'm doing large lots of .223 or 45acp, I use the 100 count primer sleeves to break them into smaller lots if I have to as I empty them. Got a medium flat rate box of LC .223 brass to turn into 300BO for my new carbine upper. Was going to make the cutting jig on the mill (and still may)...

that is how wire strippers are created, but they tend to be wire gauge specific unless you are really careless. Been there done that. I still have my red handled Klein's from Industrial Electronics tech school in 1985, and they still cut any wire and can strip 18, 14, and 12 ga.

    Removing dents from oil pan

What Rusty said, except I would probably put a hunk of 2x10 lumber under it to soften the blow on most of it and use a couple 1" hardwood dowels with different shapes ground on the end. Heat should only be needed if you have a sharp crease. Most of that should pound out cold.
