    Cool Railroad Repair

Never repaired a railway track. Did try some thermite for fun, burned through a piece of half inch mild steel plate. What really impressed me was how bright it was. It was tough to ignite but using a piece of magnesium as a fuse got it going.

    Minimum Air Compressor Size

Have painted cars, one panel at a time with a 3/4 hp unit but with a 30 gallon tank. One panel at a time is no real problem if you are doing non metallic. Had a neighbor that sprayed cars using a half hp comp. and a 50 or 60 gallon tank. Big enough tank, don't need a high hp comp.

    Mild 318 pinging

When i bought my 69 barracuda coupe the dist. was set at 5 degrees retarded, pinged a lot when advanced, turned out the heat riser valve was stuck on CLOSED. Engine temp.gauge showed normal, but the intake must have been very hot.

Something you can't go without and a substitute never quite cuts it.

If you need a creamer ( or sugar ) in your coffee, you should change the brand/type of coffee. Took me 50 years to find how good coffee tastes.

Great idea! My wife and i did that about 20 years ago in our 63 vart convert. Side trips to Santa Fe and the Meteor Crater were worthwhile also.

AT&T just put this in my backyard!

Was told in training that the radiation from the FPN-36 GCA would make us sterile, got married a couple of years later and found that was not true.

Advance the timing before TDC. Why?

You do it because it will run better. Closer to 15 degrees is what you want.

Used to be that a 10 year old tire was "too old", now it seems that 5 years is too old, what's next? Who is behind this and is it official ?

    the great mask debate

Yes, when distancing is a problem. Not so sure about how effective they are when people are wearing homemade cloth ones or using scarfs and what about those that don't wear them covering their noses, are they boasting about being mouth breathers?

Slant exhaust black carbon at tail pipe?

Just because the spec. calls for zero degrees initial timing does not mean that's optimal. When i had a slant six it was set at 7 at least and ran well.

High oil pressure after oil change??

If you are buying a K&N filter, check where it originated from as shown on the filter, not on the carton. Yes, maybe i'm being racist, but when i see the garbage that's going in our countries, so what?

Did the steering wheel on my 52 coupe with a Wheel Skins kit (1983 Mirada wheel) Looks good and not hard to do. Order it with an extra needle and cord so that you can do a "baseball stich" which i did not do and should have.

    Ring and ring gap questions

Bought a 47 Plym. coupe fixer upper that had a 400 in it. Used a lot of oil. Passed Air Care anyway. Pulled the engine and found the oil problem was mainly a used valley pan gasket. The rings all had at least .125 in. end gap at the bottom of the bore. All end gaps were facing the front, same...

    Ring Gap?

Don't think your ring gap is too large. Had a 47 plym coupe with a 400 that I bought as a fixer-upper. Tore the engine down as it was using a lot of oil. All rings had a gap of .125 (1/8 in) and all gaps on all pistons faced to the front. Turned out that the oil consumption was due to a reused...

Used a Scarebird kit on my 52 Plym, works well, instructions could have been a little more detailed for a first timer like me.
