Figuring out how much heads have been cut?

The outer row of head bolts bosses on a BB are nominally 1.00” thick. Measure several of then and average the numbers. However much thinner they are than 1” will be very close to how much has been cut. Gonna be a challenge to do with heads installed & in the car. What you’re experiencing is...

    RB Valley plates

Paper gaskets on the sides, cork strips on the end. The manifold seals off the valley, like a SB does…….so no valley pan is used. Plus, stock MW heads don’t have raised ports.

    Wasn’t someone looking for a W2 intake.

We had one of those for a circle track engine about 30 years ago. It was kind of a sham. It was nothing but a pre-EGR 360 2-bbl intake with relocated bolt holes to line up with the w2 mounting holes. Still had the standard size and shape intake ports, and came with an instruction sheet that...

    RB Valley plates

A factory style valley plate does not work on heads with raised MW sized ports……..which is what TF270’s have.

    RB Valley plates

I can’t imagine why an Indy cover wouldn’t work. Same basic thing as the TF cover. Get the one with the removable panel.

    Low peak oil pressure

My suggestion would be to use an inspection camera in the valley area while priming to see if that lobe lift/lifter pairing(pre-magnum block?….actually, it has to be a magnum block to use those lifters…….right?) is causing excessive leakage around the lifters. (More lift is created by lowering...

    Best Offster Rockers for RPM

Indy buys that casting from Edelbrock in an unfinished state, and relocates the rocker saddle to facilitate the use of the longer BB rockers. Since many theoretically “correct” SB rockers are already too long when used on Ede RPM heads……I can only imagine how poor the situation would be by...

    Best Offster Rockers for RPM

I’m pretty sure the factory T/A intake rockers are offset quite a bit more than .180. More like .300-.350 iirc. Considering the W2 rocker is like .700-.750…..

    speedmaster 440 heads

There was a period of time, early on, with these heads (PC/SM Victor copy) when the assembled version were supplied with valves that were just wrong. Way too long, and 2.25/1.88 diameter. The “correct” length valves are the same as the Ede Victor and Indy 440-1 heads. Starting with the...

    Best Offster Rockers for RPM

Not addressing the OP’s question directly, but no way would I mess with offset rockers for something in the low 500/500 range. If you’re not building a combo that’s capable of considerably more power than that…….some basic clean up work on RPM heads is all you need.

    Cam change?

“If it were me”, I probably wouldn’t go thru the effort of swapping in that particular cam if I was planning on using 1.6 rockers. I could see the merit in trying it with 1.5’s(because he has it), but don’t have high confidence in the results with 1.6’s. If I was buying a cam, I’d be more...

    Cam change?

That’s what I was thinking when I asked. I think any “suitable” spring will end up with open pressures that might be iffy.

    How much HP...again

If the cam lobes are smooth enough to keep the lifters from getting unhappy before the combos natural peak occurs………should be over 400/400. Of course, depending on exactly whose dyno service is used……….. the number could easily vary +/- 25hp.

    Cam change?

1.6’s will use up even more V/P clearance……..be sure you check it carefully.

    Cam change?

“1050 carb” 4150 or 4500? If the cam fits…..try it. That much duration uses up a lot of V/P clearance. Are you running 1.5 or 1.6 rockers?

    1972 Dodge Colt

You’re making nice progress! Engine sounds good…….and I’m surprised at how docile it seems/sounds with that big of a cam in it. Looking forward to some track reports.

    920 heads - What Cam?

Keep in mind the factory 318 valve springs aren’t suitable for pretty much any aftermarket performance camshaft …….especially if they’re 50+ years old. Any cam swap should include a spring replacement.

    Camshaft ID

If there is a block kicking around with a crank in it……..slide the cam in the block and after 15 minutes or so with a degree wheel, a cam follower and an indicator…..you’d know exactly what that cam is.

    HIGH FLOWING PORTED J HEADS

And Sometimes the stock bore is plenty big enough, and isn’t holding the head back. I’ve tested several BB Indy heads on both 4.375 and 4.500 bore………and saw no gain from the bigger bore. My experience has been that the bigger bore is often not a silver bullet.

Stock valve guide size X heads

As they come from the factory, SB Mopar heads have guide bosses with a nominal OD of .625”, and the guide bores are for valves with 3/8” stems. After they have been thru the machine shop, and been set up with aftermarket parts to facilitate the use of a bigger cam……..who knows what the...

    HIGH FLOWING PORTED J HEADS

I have no experience with any large bore SB stuff…….so I can’t comment on that. IMO, a good place to get higher flowing factory SB heads ported to “high” flow is KG engines in Ohio. Edit-actually I do have a small block large bore SB story…… I use a 4.00” bore for testing most SB stuff. I had...

    J head porting

FWIW……..you don’t really need to do any of that “boat-tailing” behind the guide to reach 240cfm. After you have the seats cut for the 2.02 valve……you’re going to have a bunch of blending to do.

Well I ordered myself some new valve seat cutters

I can tell you this……. At my shop, it’s pretty easy to spend $1000 on refurbishing old factory iron heads. About a year or so ago, a friend with an auto repair shop dropped off some pretty undesirable SBC factory heads. They came off some smogger 350 that had been stuffed in an Elcamino, and it...

    TF & Speedmaster Flow Tests

A couple of random thoughts…… - lowering the seat .090” takes away what I feel is valuable length on the floor from the apex to the seat -I don’t feel you can actually fix the SSR by playing with the seat angles. The seat angles are more about pressure recovery as the air moves thru/past the...
