Thermostatic system connected to ported or non-ported vacuum?

Yeah, that’s the catch-22. On start-up, an engine wants 1) hot air to help vaporize the fuel and 2) excess fuel. But of course an appropriate not-too-rich AFR and cold / dense air is good for power on a warm engine, though the air still has to be warm enough to vaporize the fuel properly. In...

Thermostatic system connected to ported or non-ported vacuum?

The factory service manual mentions it’s full on at 10F and full off at 100F of air temp. Between those temperatures, it blends. “The quantity of air through each circuit is controlled by a heat control door in the snorkel so as to maintain a temperature of 95 to 105 degrees at the temperature...

Thermostatic system connected to ported or non-ported vacuum?

Yes, I see that now. 9A-2 (pg 552): "A vacuum hose connects to a hose nipple on the base of the carburetor and leads to one side (either side) of the sensor and another hose connected to the opposite side of the sensor and leads to the vacuum diaphragm on the snorkel." So... I assume when they...

Thermostatic system connected to ported or non-ported vacuum?

Trying to reconnect the thermostatic air cleaner system so it runs better when cold (1971 Valiant). I have a freshly-rebuilt Carter BBS: there are only two small vacuum ports. The ported one which goes to the distributor advance and the other for the choke pull-off. There are no other small...

    '71 198 swap to a '76 225 - help identifying noise?

Yeah, turns out it’s relatively common. The dipstick passes really close to the crankshaft, so if they are even slightly bent in the wrong spot the crank hits it. Not a great design.

    '71 198 swap to a '76 225 - help identifying noise?

Found it! Pulled the dipstick and the noise went away. No amount of bending the dipstick or putting it in a different orientation changed it, so just left it out. Dumb thing! Anyways, the thin flimsy bellhousing cover is off since that was rubbing too. Can I leave it off? Is it really that...

    '71 198 swap to a '76 225 - help identifying noise?

Yup, when first started it was making a terrible racket and I suspected the bellhousing cover. Removed it and that noise disappeared, leaving this other less severe noise. So is the bellhousing cover even necessary? I don’t drive it a ton - rarely in the rain and never in the winter.

    '71 198 swap to a '76 225 - help identifying noise?

Yeah, 198’s are kinda cool and different. Needed to get it back up and running ASAP for the Woodward Dream Cruise and swapping in a 225 was easier and faster. Also, 13% more displacement never hurts :) And the ‘76 we got has hardened exhaust seats so that’s a plus.

    '71 198 swap to a '76 225 - help identifying noise?

Torqued them all to 22 ft-lbs per spec. Yes, the long rods are desirable, I do know. Any idea what a set would be worth? I was just going to sell the whole engine and let someone else dig them out. Don't have a ton of time right now.

    '71 198 swap to a '76 225 - help identifying noise?

The original 198 in my '71 Valiant lost cylinder #6, so we found a decent '76 225 and swapped it in today. Mounts were different and there was a bunch of additional emissions stuff which we removed, but otherwise went pretty darn well! These engines are so straightforward, love it! Anyways...

Who's running NGK ZFR5N in there Slant?

I literally just installed NGK ZFR5N (#3459) a few days ago. As mentioned, they are extended tip and get the spark closer to the center of the chamber, which is desirable. I also have the HEI conversion, so I gapped them a bit higher in the 0.036-38" range (and you can certainly go higher). Runs...

Engine dies when I step on the gas

This happened to me as well, shortly after I got my '71 Valiant last summer. Turns out the Holley 1920 had a small crack near the accelerator pump. When you stepped on it, it would leak gas out the carb onto the intake manifold! With the gas not going into the engine, it obviously leaned out and...

GM HEI "M4 pin" to female socket distr cap??

Yes, you just push the wire through the boot, cut the insulation back, fold the wire back over and crimp the terminal over the end. I would still try to find a "professional" made one at some point, but it should work no problem for quite a while.

GM HEI "M4 pin" to female socket distr cap??

Yes, there is a way. As you already know, the HEI module that comes on what you got is looking for a digital signal (square wave). The Mopar distributor puts out analog. No problem, just get the Delco D-1906 HEI module. You can get it on Amazon for about $30. You'll have to grind off one of the...

GM HEI "M4 pin" to female socket distr cap??

Hey Dan! Thanks. I just reached out to Aurora. Hopefully I'll have better luck. Magnecor hasn't responded after multiple attempts. It seems odd to me, many people have converter mid-90's HEI's to MOPAR's or other cars with socket caps. I'm surprised there isn't an off the shelf solution somewhere.

GM HEI "M4 pin" to female socket distr cap??

Yes, I had Googled every combination of words I could think of. I did find some lone terminals like this, so if I had to I guess I could get a coil wire kit and buy one of these and make my own. I was just hoping to find a pre-made wire if I could. I think the LS1 coils had this M4/pin as the...

GM HEI "M4 pin" to female socket distr cap??

No, there is a specific type of terminal that snaps over it. You can find the original GM wires with that end. I just can't find a plug wire that has that on one end and a female socket on the other. It has to exist, right? Others must've done this.

GM HEI "M4 pin" to female socket distr cap??

So.... I'm converting to GM HEI as many people have done. But I CANNOT find the right dang coil plug wire! The HEI coil is from a mid to late 90's truck/SUV and it has that odd "M4" or "pin" style terminal. I'm going from that to a traditional MOPAR cap with female socket terminals. It seems...

[FOR SALE] Electronic ignition module w/ new wiring harness

Electronic ignition module with brand new JEGS wiring harness (which cost $23 + shipping by itself). Wiring instructions also included. Electronic ignition module came with the car but not installed. Unsure of brand but looks to be in very good condition. Fully potted. Hoping to get $46 but...

ATK 5.9 Magnum crate motor horse power

Blueprint does offer a flat tappet iron head motor already as the entry level. I think they would say the cost difference between a stock 360 stroke (3.58") and the 408 stroker crank (4") is quite small now days, so why not take the cubes? It doesn't cost that much and most people would happily...

ATK 5.9 Magnum crate motor horse power

@rumblefish360 - Yes, to your point a cracked Magnum head can run a pretty long time without even being able to tell (and may take a while to even crack in the first place). But over time that crack gets worse (i.e. coolant starts to leak in, etc). The head replacement rate in the field on 318 /...

ATK 5.9 Magnum crate motor horse power

Johnny - OK, great. Thanks for the clarification on the damper. Yes, that is a plus in the value equation (which should be in the picture as you mentioned). And perhaps "pricey" was the wrong word. I think it's an unbelievable value and well worth the money, I only meant that in absolute terms...

ATK 5.9 Magnum crate motor horse power

So I just confirmed with ATK: they DO NOT use the EQ (Engine Quest) heads on their iron head 360 crate motors! Stock Magnum heads. Very disappointing. Those stock Magnum heads are extremely crack prone. Why you would use those to save a couple bucks is beyond me. I asked them to consider using...

    EQ318B Magnum heads discontinued ?

There are genuine EQ heads and (like a million other things) Chinese knock-offs. I suspect many of the ones with issues were actually the Chinese fakes. See this below, which includes a response from the company saying EQ has not and does not cast in China. EQ mag iron head difference: jegs VS...

ATK 5.9 Magnum crate motor horse power

Cool. Thanks Johnny! Yes, the $1,300 current price difference between the iron head flat tappet 408 and the aluminum head roller 408 is a screaming deal. No argument there. Telling myself to suck it up and clip coupons! Hypothetically... if several of us wanted to buy one at the same time...

ATK 5.9 Magnum crate motor horse power

The CH318A and B are the exact same head with one difference: the A is tapped for the Magnum-style straight down intake manifold bolts and the B is tapped for the original LA-style 45 degree angle. (As you said, the second letter (AA and BA) just means assembled w/ valves & springs.) The EQ...

ATK 5.9 Magnum crate motor horse power

Yeah for sure, unless that's just what they have on hand right now and can and will order more. The million dollar question is if the EQ (and probably JEGS) heads are still actively being produced. I don't see why not. @gzig5 - I would hope so, but then Blueprint should advertise that! They...

They still show on EQ's webpage, which shows "Updated 1/1/2020" Stock | EQ Cores & Recycling Also, the JEGS heads are almost certainly made by EQ. They specifically mention that these heads address the OE cracking issue. https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/514222/10002/-1

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but it's a good one. I just picked up a '71 Valiant with 39,800 original miles. It is really solid and has a fresh blue metal flake paint job. I'm excited to have it! It current has the 198 slant six (yes, not even the 225!) and I'm a power guy so I've been...
