speedmaster stuff pulled from Summit racing shelves

A lot of the designs in the speed parts industry just plain aren't possible to protect with a patent. And a lot of well-established speed parts have some level of copying - for example, Aeromotive was started by people who had left Essex Industries, and a lot of their pumps and regulators look a...

    Warning about counterfeit parts

Yep, best case for Speedmaster is they found an existing counterfeit parts operation, asked "Could you put our logo on it instead?" - then didn't check when the parts arrived. That's at least slightly defensible - "We're trying to get counterfeiting operations to act more like legit contract...

    Slant 6 timing cover

Charlie is correct about how the '66 timing tab attaches; it is a separate piece, bolted on.

Jacob’s ignition testing. Thanks to Newbomb Turk….

The system I tested used multiple diodes, one in between each spark plug and the distributor. That would drive up the price, but should improve distributor life.

Help needed Dodge Dart 1966 wiring this is what I've done so far, can't get it cranked, put in a ez wiring loom 12 fuse in it

Reversed wires to the distributor pick-up generally result in timing that's way off; check with a timing light.

Help needed Dodge Dart 1966 wiring this is what I've done so far, can't get it cranked, put in a ez wiring loom 12 fuse in it

The starter relay gets its positive power from the ignition switch and its ground through the neutral safety switch.

    Electronic ignition upgrade.

The Mopar box's dwell is not constant either. It's a very simple design from an era where transistors were expensive and using an integrated circuit in a module would have been unthinkable. (At one point, Chrysler patented a voltage regulator design, which they never used, that had only one...

    Un-converting a Powermaster swap

All you need is a pair of ring terminals for the field wires and the plug for the voltage regulator. The plug is a bit of an odd design, but it's readily available through most parts stores.

Jacob’s ignition testing. Thanks to Newbomb Turk….

Interesting, I think that's a plasma ignition system. We tested a similar design when I worked at DIYAutoTune - I won't say who built it because it was an early development mule and maybe they sorted the bugs out. What this ignition did was it charged a capacitor to 500 volts similar to a CDI...

    Electronic ignition upgrade.

Also worth noting - HEI isn't the only ignition with variable dwell. The Bosch systems used on most early '80s European cars, Ford's TFI ignition module (the one that replaced the Duraspark), and pretty much everything fuel injected where the EFI computer had timing control integrated all used...

    Electronic ignition upgrade.

If this isn't using forced induction or spinning to 8000 RPM, the only thing I have to add is to get the advance curve dialed in for your motor. This is one of the biggest things people overlook, and a bad advance curve leaves a lot of power on the table.

Who would like to beta test one of my new voltage regulators?

Applying for a business license. Interestingly they didn't reject the application and instead asked me to make corrections and resubmit it.

Who would like to beta test one of my new voltage regulators?

The local zoning board does not like the idea of making electronics for sale at home. It appears that having them made at a local contract manufacturer may work but would force this project to start a couple steps further along than I originally planned. Looking into this further...

    IGNITION UP GRADE NEEDED ?

It's also possible to do this with a specialized vacuum advance can - although I have no idea where you'd get one nowadays. Or if you're running EFI, it will probably have this feature built in.

    IGNITION UP GRADE NEEDED ?

How much boost do you plan to run, and what fuel? If this is something like 8 psi on pump gas, what you have should be fine. The main upgrade you need to deal with is the correct distributor curve - including boost pressure retard. If you're talking 25 psi on methanol, you may need a bit more...

    Hooking up my ignition ...

I have seen a four cylinder Porsche 944 lose 5 hp on a chassis dyno when swapping a 30 year old Bosch coil for an Accel Super Stock unit. I'd consider the Bosch coil - they used the same part for late '80s Porsche 944 and BMW 325 applications - for a build that needs a can type coil. The...

    2bbl conversion for slant six

IIRC the Super Six package may have had another 1/4" of exhaust diameter but no other significant changes. An exhaust upgrade can be beneficial, but isn't mandatory when installing a Super Six. Although any changes to the manifolds will be easier when you have them off already, of course. If...

    2bbl conversion for slant six

The Super Six uses the same exhaust manifold as the one barrel setup, so there isn't a pressing need to make changes. Unless he wants to make improvements there too, of course.

Who would like to beta test one of my new voltage regulators?

I still have two of the AT connector regulators assembled. If you're OK with the problems with the potting compound (keep it away from water; I'm pretty sure it will leak!) and want to test it, PM me with your address and I'll send you one of them.

Who would like to beta test one of my new voltage regulators?

First out the door is going to be a stock replacement at this point, but I can come back to the improved version if there's enough demand. Paperwork is getting more and more complicated. Getting an LLC set up was an easy fill in the blank deal and $100. The IRS was pretty straightforward to...

    2bbl conversion for slant six

Pretty easy to get some more common pedals in there like an F/M/J body pedal, although you'll need to make a bracket out of steel plate to get it in the right place. Or if you want to keep pedals that swing from the floor, a lot of mid '90s BMW pedals might be adaptable.

    Plug and play distributor

Minimum components? If your distributor doesn't have a jammed advance mechanism or shot bearings, replace the pick-up and wire it to a 4 pin HEI module. This takes the ballast resistor out of the picture and is a simple, compact build. Others have mentioned @halifaxhops offering custom curved...

Who would like to beta test one of my new voltage regulators?

If you're wondering what is going on now, it's paperwork. Before ordering the production batch, I'm busy making sure I have all the forms filed to get a home business officially in business. Once this process is complete, I'll be able to get back to the process of making the parts.

    Plug and play distributor

What exactly are you looking to charge with the new distributor? Ease of changing the advance curve, hide the ignition module inside the distributor, or what? And what's the intended use for the car? A street cruiser will have different needs from a 10,000 RPM naturally aspirated drag car, or a...

    Repair of damaged PCB

Definitely a cold solder joint. I would redo the joint using flux paste, which will help get through the rust. If you have a good solder joint, it won't need glue, and if you have a bad one, glue won't save it.

    HEI conversion benefits

An MSD box is a bit of a different critter: It fires the coil by dumping 400 volts from a capacitor into the coil. HEI uses an electronic switch that behaves like points, but with variable dwell. This has a few differences in practice. One, a tach that works with the stock ignition will work...

    HEI conversion benefits

Under vacuum, you have less cylinder filling and the mixture doesn't burn as quickly. So it needs more timing to run efficiently. Unless you only run at idle and full throttle, your ignition system will need some way to provide this advance - either a mechanical advance diaphragm or an...
