thought id post this. Few weeks ago i fixed up a sniper on a small block 454 in a Monaro. Client thought it was underpowered and wondered if i could extract more power out of it. We drove it and i data logged the drive then went away and looked at the logs. I made an advance table for it and...

load sensing spark advance is extremely important in achieving great driving standards. When i tune engines i make sure that the spark strength is as strong as i can get it,this includes changing coils and ignition types, alternators (which i monitor as we drive - a lot of the time they get...

I like that. For me thats the fun of tuning,is working out what works for the car at hand and seeing that smile on their face when they drive it.

That is a very nice looking engine bay. very nice.

    yes i agree.

he doesn't know.its a narrow lobe cam. When i looked at the car it wouldnt idle or drive correctly,no power very rough.

Mechanical: 17°@idle 25°@2200 32°@3300 33°@4000 34°@5000 Vacuum: 3°@8" 7°@11" 15°@15" total 49°@cruise with vacuum timing starting as soon as you move the throttle. This requires tuning as to get blades exactly in the correct spot for the vacuum pickup point with where the vac hole is located...

i agree with what they say. Time is so crucial for air saturation,as it is for compression. When you reduce both you have a mess to deal with.

The unleaded fuel that we have to deal with today is difficult to understand when tuning with large cam street engines.I did one today,350 chev with world product cast heads and big cam with not enough compression and not enough spark energy. So it likes to run more on the light vapors.required...

Hi Bret, You sound interesting. i have one question for you. What is the greatest thing to date that you have learnt in tuning cars?
  11. C

    Bruce ( Shrinker )

    vaporization and timing.
  12. C

    Bruce ( Shrinker )

Yes that is correct. With the smart carby there was no air correction system for the mains fuel,so the mains fuel is initiated at lower cfm flow.it was pretty cool.

The camshaft profile greatly effects the vaporization of the fuel, especially in low load driving. There is potentially a large amount of vacuum generated as the intake valve lifts off the seat area and its this area where a lot of vaporization takes place. You can kill this area real quick when...

    Bruce ( Shrinker )

it certainly is linked to it thats for sure.camshaft profile is very important. just remember this. we all have to deal with engines that make quite a bit of CO.we tune with holleys etc.. We dont have the luxury of very good droplet control so CO is there and a big part of it is good because its...

    Bruce ( Shrinker )

yes when you get it pretty right you can hear the air going down the airbleeds quite loud.

    Bruce ( Shrinker )

this is one aspect of what happens in the cylinder in regards to ignition timing being linked to CO production/flame kernal. Spark timing for power is generally the same at 8,000rpm as it is for 3,000rpm.This is because the flame speed increases at the same rate as the rpm. There is no real...

    Bruce ( Shrinker )

yes that would of been a good conversation. when you get the supersonic air going into idle circuits it smashed up fuel drops to very fine prior to exiting the exit are into the bore.
  19. C

    Bruce ( Shrinker )

yes absolutely. CO production and the amount of it thats left over from the previous bang effects the flame kernal immensely. Homogenization is key to reduce cycle to cycle variations and the fuel has to be gassed so you can homogenize it. When you are tuning an engine you are tuning the...

Thermoquad are very good.the transfer system is very good, better than a Holley. thats why its smoother and revved quicker.the smaller venturi gets you more vaporization as well, and that is why there is more vaporization at ignition time.possibly. i say possibly because the droplet size thing is...

    Bruce ( Shrinker )

yes i have a digital dash, its for that.

    Bruce ( Shrinker )

try not to get to caught up in thinking that the small drops come from the transfer and the large from the main boosters.Of course they are different sizes, but if you just think like that you will miss other important goodies. This is what i find with tuning. The transfer fuel if its done...

with pump unleaded petrol, you have to be real careful with the amount of vaporization that you have on the up stroke (compression). The light vapors that boil at a lower temp have the expensive octanes in them, they can withstand quite a bit of heat energy for a short amount of time. The higher...

    Bruce ( Shrinker )

yes that is correct. However, with the smart carby he would run 2 different size holes in the spreader bars for the mains fuel.this was where the different size droplets come from that i was referring to.
