1973 904 leaking from bellhousing inspection plate

It was not overfilled. I checked it. It was actually a little low. I will check the converter drain plug next.

That is something I am going to check. The factory service manual mentioned that.

1973 904 leaking from bellhousing inspection plate

I should have done this first but I looked at the factory service manual. There are some simple things to try before pulling the transmission.

1973 904 leaking from bellhousing inspection plate

So that is the consensus, That the transmission needs to come out? I need to get psyched up for that. I think I'll live with the leak for a while while I research what all is involved with removal and rebuilding. As a long shot, there is a converter drain plug. Could that be leaking? To...

1973 904 leaking from bellhousing inspection plate

Hello, 1973 Dart with 904 transmission is leaking ATF from the bellhousing inspection plate. There will be a few drops on the ground after it sits for a few days. Where is it coming from and how do I fix it? Thanks

How many cars with original drivetrain are on this forum?

I started this thread to see how many and what kind of unmodified A body cars are on this forum. It is a big success. In 24 hours the thread grew to 2 pages and 25 plus unmodified Mopars came out of the shadows. The cars fell into 2 categories. First, the cars that came from the factory with a...

How many cars with original drivetrain are on this forum?

How many forum participants out there have cars with the original drivetrain? (or an identical replacement). It is my observation most people on this forum have modified cars. This is my unmodified 1973 Swinger with 318 V8. I took it out of mothballs these past two years with a lot of help from...

    'Someday' finally happened

Zanefox, your car must have spent some time in St.Louis. It has an old style KSHE-95 bumper sticker. That was a popular hard rock radio station when I was in high school c. 1980. They are still on the air. I like the red and black interior on your car.

7.25 pinion seal replacement questions can't get the pinion nut off

I know, I read a few places to tighten a few degrees more. I just could not get it to move anymore with the tools I had. The only way I can see to make it tighter is to use a more powerful impact wrench. I was using jack stands. I had the tires about 8 inches off the ground. There was too much...

7.25 pinion seal replacement questions can't get the pinion nut off

I used a dremel tool to make a notch on the pinion shaft, the nut and the yoke. I used the impact wrench just to loosen the nut. I carefully counted the number of turns to remove the nut. Upon reassembly, I put the nut back on with the same number of turns until the notches lined up again like...

    1973 Dart Swinger resurrected

I just replaced the leaking differential pinion seal in my Dart. I got to thinking, I have fixed 10 leaks in this car in the last two years: radiator water pump 2 core plugs in the engine power steering gear box rebuild. This had been leaking for over 30 years. 3 leaks in the automatic...

7.25 pinion seal replacement questions can't get the pinion nut off

Success! I replaced the seal and after a test drive the leak is gone. That is the 10th leak I fixed on this car since getting it back on the road about a year ago. Hopefully this will be the last for a while. I could not have done it without help from this forum. Thanks to all who responded.

I borrowed an impact wrench and got it off. I counted, 8 1/2 turns.

7.25 pinion seal replacement questions can't get the pinion nut off

This project is not going well. I cannot get the nut off. I cannot get enough leverage to break the nut free. I am using the plate tool with the holes recommended in a post above with a 3/4 ratchet and a 1/2" breaker bar with an extension pipe with a 1 1/4" socket. I even heated it with a...

source for nylon washer on differential filler plug 7.25" ?

Does anybody out there know of a source for the nylon washer on the filler plug on a 7.25" differential? 7/8" inner diameter and 1 7/16" outer diameter. I looked at Ace hardware, not big enough. None at classic industries. Mc Master Carr had them with a minimum order of 25.

7.25 pinion seal replacement questions can't get the pinion nut off

I need to replace leaking pinion seal in 1973 Dart with 7 1/4 differential. I read the Factory Service Manual and researched previous threads on this topic on this forum. Questions: 1. How do you hold the yoke still to remove the nut without the tool in the service manual? 2. When I reinstall...

rear main seal replacement 73 Dart 318 V8

I am cautiously optimistic the leak is fixed. There were no drips on the ground after the last two times I have driven it. Looks like Divenut was right.

Can someone look up a part number for a water pump?

It seems the castings made before 1977-1978 had 2 web supports cast in between bolt holes. The date code on mine is 1979 so it has only one web support between bolt holes. This is from my 1973 318 V8. This is not identical to the one the car came from the factory with but it will work the same...

Can someone look up a part number for a water pump?

The numbers are 2951571 and 09104 and 38. The number 79 is inside the circle. What years, models, and engines is this correct for? Is there a date code on it? Thank you.

Difference between Chrysler Blue and Chrysler Turquoise engine paint colors?

I think my first spray can that had a hint of green in it was from O'Reilly's. The second with a hint of green was OER brand. The paint on my engine looks most like the first picture in Abody Joe's post. There were probably variations in the same color at the factory and then add 50 years of...

Difference between Chrysler Blue and Chrysler Turquoise engine paint colors?

2 different brands of "Chrysler Blue" 1970-1974 are not a good match for the factory original engine color in my 1973 318 Dart. They both have more green than what is on the engine. Has anyone else noticed this? The last I used is a spray can of OER brand engine paint Chrysler Blue # K89166...

I ordered a strip from Waldron's exhaust for $15. Someone on another forum suggested them. Thanks to all who responded.

looking for a source for rubber exhaust hanger strap material.

That is exactly what I need but it is expensive. In this case I think cutting up an old tire would be more practical.

looking for a source for rubber exhaust hanger strap material.

I am looking for a source of just the rubber fabric used on exhaust hangers. I want to cut it to size and make my own. This is about 1/4" or thicker reinforced with string in the rubber. My 1973 Dart has the quiet car package. The exhaust hanger has two of these straps, one on each side of the...

rear main seal replacement 73 Dart 318 V8

UPDATE even though the oil pressure sensor was leaking, it was not the only leak because I continued to get spots on the ground under the bell housing. (it was oil not transmission fluid). So, using advice from this thread and youtube videos, I changed the rear main seal and the pan gasket...

Thank you for your replies. It came off easily with 2 nuts. The flywheel cover went back in easily.
