    Dana 60 strength?

I pulled it out of a Superbird that had 14,000 miles on it and gave $150 for it at that time. I'm still a firm believer in the Dana 60 and have put one in my '72 440 Duster and my '67 408 Barracuda. I've got Strange axles in the Duster and Moser axles in the Barracuda.

    Dana 60 strength?

For what it's worth, I put a factory original 4.10 Dana 60 in my '70 Roadrunner back in the mid-seventies. I doubt I was much more than 400 HP. The torqueflite I ran was modified and slammed each gear so hard it would 'irk' the tires every time it shifted - even idling with my foot off the...

    Bent up stuff

I don't think it's been established yet that your pushrods were definitely too long. Speculation is that they may have been. What is known is that things bound up and parts broke. Some speculated that your valves had hit the pistons. That's not known unless you see indication they did hit...

    Bent up stuff

With all the bent pushrods and broken springs one thing is obvious. Parts were being forced into places there wasn't enough room for them to be. (Springs being compressed to where the coils bound and pushrods bending because they couldn't lift past the point everything was hitting) It makes...

    Bent up stuff

I couldn't really say for certain that I can see it in your picture. There are guys WAY WAY more experienced than I am about this stuff but it doesn't seem to me that the springs should compress unevenly. I can't say that I ever noticed it on the engines I have worked on. I wouldn't be...

    Bent up stuff

I hate to say it, but that seems pretty careless for a machinist. Even the best guys screw up sometimes but none of his work was up to par. I feel for ya and I'm confident you'll get everything sorted out. Right now I'd say you've already got a better understanding of valvetrains than he did...

If not caused by a grinder then what did cause all these? Did it happen while the motor was running?

    Bent up stuff

When I put Edelbrock heads with COMP CAMS Ultra Pro Magnum rockers on our 383 I had to order custom length pushrods. The ones that COMP CAMS said would be the correct length with our setup was wrong. (they were too long) I bought a length checker to establish the right length and ordered new...

    Bent up stuff

Correct pushrod length will allow the roller to be as centered as possible above the valve stem. If your pushrod length is either too short or too tall it will position the roller off center and will cause an uneven sideways load on the valve.

I'm viewing the picture of the roller on a 40" screen and it's really scarred. If that damage was caused when he was grinding for clearance he wasn't very careful. No offense VonCramp, but maybe you need to enlarge the image so you can see it better.

You'll stop screwing things up when they start shoveling dirt on ya. LOL. They always say you learn the most from your mistakes. I beat myself up each time something I'm working on turns to crap. If I didn't want to continue beating my head against the wall I'd give up on it all. When it's...

    Refinishing Super Tricks

I hope that one of those deals works out. It's not uncommon to see the unpolished Super Tricks show up at swap meets around here and they're usually cheaper but they almost always have battle scars.

Like Roy said, to be properly set up you can't always get by bolting parts on - even with recommended springs the installed height should be checked.

The higher the ratio of rocker arm will translate into a further opening of the valve and compress your springs more.

I never trust the timing marks anymore. I haven't built near as many motors as a lot of other guys here on FABO but I have bought one gear set that was mis-marked. Ever since then I always use a degree wheel to make sure the cam is in sync with the crank. On one other build we had a small...

So you did degree the cam in? - Or did you just use the reference marks on the timing set?

That's what I thought too but then I realized that with the subsequent damage it probably wasn't running as 'great' as the OP had thought. - Maybe??

    Bent up stuff

It IS possible to have a strange amount of valve to piston clearance if your camshaft is not properly timed with the crank.

The most you could do would be a compression check but that might not detect a slightly bent valve.

I suppose on a dirt track car with all the mud getting slung around he might have had bad experiences with hoses coming off but that's a way different environment than a street or strip car lives in.

    Bent up stuff

Sorry to hear about the damage but it's not fatal. I wouldn't just replace the pushrods though. With two broken springs there's a chance the valve train was binding and causing the springs to over compress. You'll want to make sure the valves weren't contacting pistons also. - Hope none of...

    Bent up stuff

Yes. - There are a lot of details left out. Why did Voncamp's buddy disconnect the PCV, vacuum advance, and advance the timing if the car was running perfectly? When was the 'new cam' installed? If it was just installed earlier that day I'd guess the lash wasn't set properly and the damage...

    Refinishing Super Tricks

I couldn't tell in the first pic I posted whether or not those had a slight polish to them. There's another set of 4 on there (Racingjunk.com) now that definitely seem to be a satin finish. The rears are 15 X 12 but maybe they'd split them up.

Big Block power with better heads???

Interesting... I realize you're not aiming for the restoration market with your concept but rather for the guys tweaking as much HP as they can out of their motors. - So the purists out there may cringe at the idea of putting Chebby parts on their cars but most likely the blocks would be...

first time down the track advise?

I'm running a mechanical pump with my 408. - 4.10 gears, 520 HP. Could be your pump isn't pulling like it should for one of several reasons. I don't mind electric pumps but good mechanical are out there and they're quieter.

Congrats! Nothing broke. You kept your head and were able to do a successful test & tune - or at least the test part of it anyway. And as stated before, it sounds like you had fun. Working the kinks out of the system will get you into the lower e.t.s. How did it hook? - And did it seem...

first time down the track advise?

The first time I went racing (back in the 70s) I was so nervous. My first concern was to avoid looking like an idiot. (I still had hope back then) My second concern was trying to beat the Chevelle that had lined up next to me. The adrenaline was really pumping and I caught a good light but...

first time down the track advise?

My 408 will do 11s with a 4.10 and cheater slicks but I've shaved off a lot of weight with fiberglass body panels. I was only running a 2500 stall then. Mike dyno'd mine at 520. Some of these really well prepped tracks are really gummy at the starting line but it'll likely still want to slip...
