    AFB accel pump

Doesnt need it. Ran super last year when I mothballed it for the winter. No leaks… gaskets all good…just a petrified accel pump.

    AFB accel pump

Thanks, I found originals at Mike’s Carb Parts, but by the time I pay the currency conversion(I’m in Canada) and shipping (did I mention I’m in Canada?)we’re talking $65+…thats the cost of a whole kit up here. I’m trying to avoid that. I can get an Edelbrock pump for $25 up here, hence my question.

    AFB accel pump

Anyone know if the accel pump from an Edelbrock 1400,03,04,05,06 will work in an older Carter AFB, specifically, a Carter AFB #4294 ('67 273). I understand 1407 and up use larger diameter pumps. Correct originals are getting hard to find, and expensive, and buying a whole rebuild kit just for...

    440 Throttle Return Springs

Your "Proposed" location puts less strain on the carb body where the throttle shaft goes through the main body.

    2 bbl carb

I agree with pretty much all that's quoted here, EXCEPT, I usually try to get the engine to idle as slow as possible, then adjust the idle mixture, thus making the mixture adjustments most obvious. After adjusting mixture, set idle speed at best possible setting for your application.

    Holley floods engine

You're probably going to have to go through the carb. Check needles for junk holding them open...check for blown power valve...check for fresh, clean fuel (actually, that should be #1).

    Opinions please

Why not just get the correct parts? They're engineered to work properly together.

How Does an older Carb without a Choke Pull Off Do It?

    Should have a choke pull-off...

    Carter carb

That "SA" number should be stamped on the baseplate somewhere, I believe. Then you'll have the whole number you need to order a rebuild kit.

Need pics of 273 4 BBL choke

That's exactly the way mine looks too. In your pic, as the spring warms up, it'll turn counter-clockwise, and the weight of the rod, etc. will pull open the choke butterfly and fast idle cam. Make sure all of this is freed up and moving easily. You also may need to bend the rod to get the choke...

Need pics of 273 4 BBL choke

You might need to remove it, and adjust the spring tension lighter by loosening the nut (as seen in CudaAl's post). Also, make sure the rod pulls the choke butterfly open completely when it's hot, You may have to bend the rod to get it right. Mine's a bit mangled....but it works....

Carburetor Question - Is this a good call?

Good post Mattax...I was pointing out that when the pump arm is moved, it appears that the pump lever doesn't, as there is a space between the upper nut and the arm, telling me that the accel lever is jammed and not moving to activate the accel diaphragm.

    Thermoquad base gasket leak

Wiggle the throttle shaft up/down and forward/back. If there's a lot of slop, that could be your problem...some slop is acceptable. Also check float level on that side of the carb...could be too high.

Carburetor Question - Is this a good call?

If you look at the 2 pics, the one on the left (at idle) looks fine, but the one on the right has a gap between the nut and the arm. Seems to me the lever is jammed in one position and isn't moving at all, which stops the diaphragm from pumping any fuel. I'd check that accel diaphragm for...

Carburetor Question - Is this a good call?

Sounds good...you're making good progress. With the engine off, pull the air filter, look down the primary bores and move the throttle a wee bit to see if you get anything out of the accel. jets...it should squirt even with a very small movement of the throttle. If not, then adjust at the accel...

Carburetor Question - Is this a good call?

Ok...here's the plate I used many years ago, for just what you're doing. As you can see, the Allen bolt fits perfectly w/ no grinding req'd. Those are 1.25" bolts, but 1" will probably be perfect...

Carburetor Question - Is this a good call?

Don't need Grade 8 bolts for this issue...just get whatever Allen heads they have...you aren't torquing them down very tight anyway...it's just an aluminum plate.

Carburetor Question - Is this a good call?

Sorry...I actually just grabbed that pic from the 'net, but back many moons ago, I used that same plate on the same intake you have, and, with the correct bolts, it worked just fine. Try a home center (Lowe's, etc.) for those bolts, or Fastenal/McMaster-Carr.

Carburetor Question - Is this a good call?

Hmm...I have an older Carter SuperQuad 625 that I had to drill the 2 missing inner holes, so I could use it on my '67 Commando intake w/o adapter.
