Just read your post "Finally", congratulations and it answers a lot of questions. My 2 cents worth the big block has the wow factor but the small block will do everything you want.

So how far do you drive? What body is it going in? Are you worried about gas mileage? What power band are you looking for? Do you have a suspensions set up to handle the different kind of power a bb vs sm block? What do your wheel wells look like? Are you talking light to light racing more...

There's a ton of helpful advice to be found here. You may not realize those were serious questions about your intended application, and absolutely necessary in order to give meaningful answers.
