A real testament to stock bottom end capabilities

I read a long time ago that Bob Glidden never used an engine stand for just this reason. He would assemble engines on the bench and do his measurements on the bench, without the stresses and flex to an engine that the engine stand would incur. He was a world champion for several years with Ford...

    Cylinder wall weld??

Agreed. I did not realize that he was in Austria, I didn't look at his avitar. That's a game changer for sure. As mentioned, If you can't find a better block, then hit it with some Ni-Rod and machine it flush, and it might be good enough. The previous repair was not very good, and the part that...

    Cylinder wall weld??

That looks odd and shoddy to me. I have never seen a repair like this before from the factory. Did it run okay and seal before you took it apart? Or, have you never run it? I would be looking for another block to build if it were me, after all, it's only a 318 and there are a lot of cores around...

    Plugging smog holes in heads....

The heads were on, and my thought was that the remainder of the hole would just fill up with carbon as time went on. And yes, I ground the surface and filed it flush with the port...

    LA 340 Intake Manifold

All that I was eluding to as for hood clearance was the fact that several B-Bodies like yours were built with a big block from the factory and that a ''fairly'' stock 440 would not need as much performance work done to the inside of the engine as the 340 to equal the power output and drivability...

    LA 340 Intake Manifold

IMHO, you would be better of using a fairly mild 440 big block for what your stated needs are. The problem with this though is that you would have to change a lot of things to big block parts like headers, transmission, motor mounts, engine brackets, etc. In the long run, you would be better off...

    dougs headers mini starter

Great to hear that they fit with power steering. It is factory power steering with the factory coupler, right? The reason that I asked this is my '69 Dart has 453s on it and manual steering and I need to change it over to power steering because of my shoulders are quite painful these days...

Suggestions for new design Aluminum Mopar SB clean slate (kind of) cylinder heads

Above all else, have the Q.A. team on their toes to ensure that they are a true 100% bolt on out of the box. Every time. To me, that would go a long way, just clean the shipping oil off and bolt them on. We've all heard the horror stories about non sealing valves, guides too tight or loose, and...

    Zinc oil additives

I find it impossible to believe that the additives would just sit in the bottom of the pan. The sump is supposed to sit on the bottom of the pan and suck out all of the oil mixture and send it through the oil galleries of the engine and then it drains back to the pan and is always recycled and...

What's your budget? What is the present condition of the engine a a whole? That has everything to do with the approach to the build. Oh, and BTW, Welcome to FABO!

All for .370 lift and under ........

I'll be watching this thread... I love the fact that you are using a 2 bbl carb, my personal opinion is that they are highly under rated for just a cruiser. Everything it seems to revolve around big head flow numbers, a big cam, headers, high compression, and a big 4 barrel and intake with...

Taking bets(no money involved) How long will this engine last?

I've done this with engines several times over several years with good results. Then I spent the rest of the money on things that really mattered like brakes, tires, suspension, and steering! It'll probably last a long time unless you are an animal with it!

Anyone make reusable valve cover gaskets?

I hate cork gaskets, I haven't had any luck with them in the past other than on oil pans with a skim of silicone. Valve cover gaskets always leaked no matter what I did and that's using stamped steel factory covers. When I use rubber or neoprene gaskets on the valve covers, I use Gasgacinch on...

Shaved heads and head gasket thickness.

Why wouldn't you just machine 2 bee's dicks off the pistons? That would solve all of your issues and allow you to use a cheap (and easy to find) off the shelf gasket. BTW, you sure have big bees where you live.....

Why the 318 is a phenomenal engine...

How much of a difference did it make using a stock 360 2 barrel intake and carb on a stock 318? I love the sleeper vibe. And for that matter, what year of 2 barrel 318 intake is the best for a 2 barrel 318 that is dead stock? I'm just playing around with ideas here.....

Why the 318 is a phenomenal engine...

Yes I have, and had a '69 Coronet R/T with a 440 magnum, 4 speed, and a 3:54 Dana rear end. Stock other than headers and electronic ignition, and it went like hell. Sometimes I think that if I put that engine and combination in an A-Body, it would be awesome. It really set you back in the seat...
