    Do you have a Stock Camshaft? If so, you are fine using the stock springs that are on it unless they hare old and have lost tension. I have an inexpensive valve spring tester but I do not know enough about the slant 6 rocker design to know if it would work for you.

    Back in the 60s when I was a broke kid - I did a valve job to a couple of my old worn cars. It seemed to make the smoking and ring seal even worse after the valve job. In any of my stock V8 cars = i would be a bit worried about only 90 PSIs compression pressure.

    Are your Valve springs in Coil bind? They should have at the very least .050 clearance. If they are going solid that would break rockers.

    Check Accelerator pump in carb as that is usually my problem.

    I recommend that even on a tight budget you buy at Harbor Freight a cheap set of Manual Calipers! You will be money and time way ahead in the long run.

    Distributor advance springs

    Just take apart the distributor and inspect and clean it. You could very possibly have an engine problem that is causing to detonation. But first look at distributor as I will not cost you any money = Just your time.
