ISKY Retainer Question, 507ST and 507STA 7 Deg Locks

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I figured SBM engine builders might know an answer. I was on the phone with ISKY yesterday and we determined the 507 retainers are right for my springs. What they could not answer was "What is the difference in an ST and and STA?" The STA is, in...

    Head Bolts for Aluminum Heads

I installed my first head studs on my slant. I won't build another performance engine without them. Cheap enough when you think about the cost of engine builds.

Rocker shims = NO rocker shaft oiling

Yea, I built my first 340 YEARS ago and was priming it with no oil to the rockers. Started turning the crank and it sprayed oil to the ceiling! Sometimes its the simple things that bit you in the rear!

    SBM Crank Identification Help!

Thanks for all the help. I guess there is no listing that would reference a number to application. My Galen white books don't have crank numbers. I have figured out that the cranks with no holes through the rod journals are 273 or 318, one pre 68 and one post. The one I am going to use is the...

    SBM Crank Identification Help!

I have 4 SBM cranks here and I do not have any way of knowing what they were used in. Is there a chart somewhere showing casting numbers or a way to ID them? 1 is marked 2658278. 1.8 crank register. 2.49 main 1 has a partial number, 46577 on the number 2 main counterweight. 1.5 crank register...

What to look for on checking 302 Heads

Since my slant is down for some machine work, I started back on my 273. I picked up some 302 castings a few years ago. I remember the seller telling me they were not cracked. But they are missing a couple of valves. Why I will find out. I am going to disassemble them and clean them. Where...

How do they cc cylinder heads

I think you have your answer on how they CC heads. The head needs to have the correct valves and the valve seats finished. There are formulas for milling heads to reduce CC by a approximate amount. The time to CC each chamber is what eats up the clock. And then after to you have your numbers...

    273 or 318 ?

This from Wika: The 198 was introduced in the North American market for model year 1970 as a more powerful base-model engine than the previous 170 engine. The increased displacement gave improved vehicle performance and lower manufacturing cost, for it was achieved with the tall RG block also...

273 Block Casting Recesses, did we find an answer?

There was a tread recently about 273 blocks with areas cast on the drivers side to clear power steering or manual steering boxes. I can't find the tread anymore, but was there an answer about why they were cast that way? I don't see 318 or 340 blocks having that feature. I have a 65-69 cast...

Rusty, why does a cam company give you any advance number anyway? Install 4 deg advanced, for instance. Why don't they just grind that in?
