Will F, M, J-body clutch pedals work in an a-body?

I knew a guy that modified a Toyota clutch and brake pedal set to fit his 71 Challenger. He didn't like how the E body set fit so he went a different way. The guy was a mad scientist in some ways.

    Pedal Extensions?

How can either of those be uncomfortable? I'm 5'10" and I have a 2007 Dodge 1500. I love that dang truck.

    Pedal Extensions?

This whole thing sounds like there are no easy, cheap and non permanent fixes. The conversions like the dwarves/midgets have adapted to cars would probably work but there is no way that those parts are cheap to get. Those people really have it rough, it is a tall person's world. Blocks on the...

    Pedal Extensions?

Geez...I'd be nervous about trusting something on the brake or clutch pedal that was just a block of wood that is zip-tied to the pedal. Those pedals are under the greatest pressure. A through bolt on a 2 to 2 1/2" block may be the limit but it would be somewhat hard to reverse without holes...

T5 Five speed slant six 74 Dart Sport.

The T-5 came in different ratios too. I thought that the 5.0 Mustangs had a version with a deeper 1st gear than the Camaros that used the T-5.

T5 Five speed slant six 74 Dart Sport.

I think you're missing the point. The deep first gear is followed by a second gear about half the ratio. The rpm drop from 1 to 2 is tremendous. For stock engines with a wide torque curve, this is fine. For an engine with a narrower power band, (Like most 340s or 360s with a long duration cam)...

T5 Five speed slant six 74 Dart Sport.

Anyone that reads the ratios knows that the 833 OD is not a performance transmission but I had to try one for myself. My Duster.... Started off a slant six automatic, I swapped in a rebuilt 360 and 833. Later I wanted to try an overdrive just to see how I'd like it. It was a poor match for the...

T5 Five speed slant six 74 Dart Sport.

The 833 overdrive transmission sucks. The gear ratios are spread WAY far apart in first and second. From 2nd to 4th it is a close ratio design. It seems like it was designed for a heavy vehicle making very little power.

The importance of measuring bell housing runout.

This confuses me. How do you check runout with an automatic transmission? Need to be checked? I do agree, especially after a collision. I'm just curious about how it would be done. If there was some way to measure the runout without complete transmission disassembly, I'd sure like to know. As...

The importance of measuring bell housing runout.

Thank you. I was able to get the measurements being off center but the further you go off center, the greater risk of error in the readings.

The importance of measuring bell housing runout.

Since I am not an expert on this, I look at it like I do other projects where I'm learning as I go. I often wonder if the tough time I am having is the same for others or if I'm making things harder for myself by doing it so wrong. For example.... In 2021 when I used this dial indicator to...

Well, It looks like the man that owns a well known transmission shop has chimed in. Thanks Dan.

The importance of measuring bell housing runout.

The story that I heard was that the manual trans cars had the bellhousing mounted to the engine, then the bell was line bored to center of the crankshaft. I did write that in the first post.

The importance of measuring bell housing runout.

This is a screen shot of a Youtube video made by the company the Tremec kit came from. You all know the phrase..."A picture is worth a thousand words" ? Well, a video takes that concept a lot further. I had an eye opening moment while watching that video. To recap, I mentioned first reading...

The importance of measuring bell housing runout.

Here is a screen shot of a YouTube video showing the tapered roller bearing used on the input shaft of the Tremec transmissions. That explains why the runout has to be so small...The bearing can't tolerate much misalignment.

The importance of measuring bell housing runout.

The original dowels in my 440/495 during my Tremec installation: Those look really short to me. I wonder if the holes in bellhousings are tapered at all at the edges. If so, these dowels are almost useless! You're looking at the ends that were in the block. I welded lug nuts to the...

The importance of measuring bell housing runout.

Don't misunderstand me....I do know the importance of precise measurements. I'm just curious as to why it seems that the new overdrives are so sensitive to runout. My 440 block only needed .014 offset dowels to bring the bell into range. The car I'm helping with now is over .040 off center. I...

The importance of measuring bell housing runout.

The topic of bell housing runout has gained a lot of attention the last few years with the rise in popularity of the aftermarket overdrive manual transmission kits. Years ago, I never heard of it, never heard of anyone even talking of it. I’d hear guys talk of clutch chatter, the transmission...

    5 Speed swap

I have no upside or downside to what people do to their cars. I just expressed an opinion that makes sense. There is a reason why trucks and cars have different ratios in their transmissions. If someone wants to ignore good advice and follow a path that will be inferior, that is up to them. Some...

    5 Speed swap

I read what you posted. It is wrong if you have a cam much bigger than stock. If you have a stock engine and use this transmission and a 2.76 gear, you'll still have the huge rpm drop but it won't matter as much. What kind of dude is happy with a stock engine??
  21. Kern Dog

    5 Speed swap

If you are happy with a large rpm drop between gears, go for it. A first gear ratio of 3.83 to 1 is worthless in a car unless you’re just cruising. The 1.5 ratio drop to second gear is close to the 833 overdrive. If your car had any performance cam in it, you either have to short shift from 1 to...

    5 Speed swap

Another matter to consider.... Truck transmissions are often suited for load hauling, not rapid acceleration. The gearing will be different from a transmission designed for a car.

    TKX bellhousing offset dowel confusion

It is okay that the dowels are long. The holes in the bell are open and the dowels will stick out about 3/8".

    TKX

The above was the rpms with the automatic in drive, 3rd gear at speed. This is after the TKO swap. The rpms are approximate but pretty close. 1650 rpms @60. 1800 rpms @65. 1975-2000 rpms @ 70. Yeah....what a HUGE change!
  25. Kern Dog

    TKX

The TKX has the same ratios available as the TKO did. Mine is a TKO 600 with a .64 overdrive.....that equates to a 36% rpm drop from 4th gear.

Thinking about a Gear Vendors OD. Can Anybody Give Some Guidance?

The GV is a lot easier to install but also has an overdrive ratio that isn't that great. I had a GV years ago. I had 4.10 gears with it at first but changed to 3.91s later. The GV ratio of .78 did make a difference in how the car felt on the highway but the Tremec 5 speed I have now has a .64...

can you remove the pressure plate assembly out through the bottom of the bellhousing

I've seen numerous women remove a bra with their shirt still on.... Why would you purposely leave an obstacle in the way? Pull the bell and make it easy on yourself.

    Slant vs v8 z bar

My 72 Duster was a slant six with three speed. I converted it to a 360 and 4 speed. The V8 is wider so I cut something like 3/4” off the hollow tube of the torque shaft to fit.
