    WHAT IS THIS??

It has been 20 some years since I worked in machining cast metals but we still found sand in them. The tool coolant spray would often bring it out. In this case, lower back of an engine block, it's not going to travel. There is no turbulence. Only circulation. The small stuff might lift and...

    A body K member

What I was told by a old school Chrysler service tech... The issue with the single bolt ear at the 67 idler arm was back when these old girls were daily drivers. Slide into a curb on icy pavement and bend that ear. Back to the alignment shop for toe reset.

    Engine mount bad

Drive line torque in forward gear pulls the driver's side biscuit apart. This destroyed a lot of the OEM fan shrouds. Passengers side biscuit gets pushed down and sideways right toward left. I've heard stories of engine and trans moving so far that shifter moved to neutral and caused over rev'...

Stripped Holes in Cylinder Head for Intake Manifold Bolts

Most people don't realize that the major diameter of a thread is very close to the minor diameter of the next size. So where 3/8" threads are totally stripped the hole is now very close to the drill diameter req'd for a 7/16" tap.

Stripped Holes in Cylinder Head for Intake Manifold Bolts

Once there is a hole, a larger drill with proper grind will have to follow that hole. There is nothing to push it one direction or the other. It could be done with a handheld drill and be very close to the same center. I would consider larger bolts (even a metric size) before Heli coils and...

Installing new timing chain on a 318, questioning the oil slinger

They did add drip leg up at the top to get more oil on the chain. The smooth edge of that slinger would only produce a solid strem of oil upward. If it had been serrated/finned/other, it would have foamed the oil. A lot of owners/builders have opted for the tensioner found in later model mopar...

    1986 police engine

I can't help but to giggle every time I read "manual" fuel pump. It's mechanical not manual as in man hand operated.

    Aftermarket gauges

Plastic will get brittle with age. How its handled is a factor also. Kink it, you caused a weak spot in the wall.

    Aftermarket gauges

The vacuum port you circled was used for a performance indicator in the instrument panel. If you dont have that indicator/gauge just put a rubber/silicone cap on the port. If you are wondering why a vacuum gauge was called a performance indicator, vacuum gauge readings - Bing

What is this condenser used for?

I was browsing a parts yard once and found that condenser mounted with one of the screws holding the ECM to the firewall. 76 Roadrunner or something, I forget

    Mechanical fuel pump

Rockauto has pictures. You can see the difference in their outlet positions. The lines to carb dont interchange easily. I used the 73 up pump and lines to get the filter off the top of my 67 273 cast iron intake. Heat rises so when the engine stops, all the heat from water and oil would head for...

    New modified oil slinger

When I questioned the simplicity of the OEM slinger, I was told too much/fan like would aerate/foam the oil. Good luck with it.

    No Decent A Bodies

I don't Know the actual numbers but I don't think "most" went to scrap unless you count in the 4 door builds. They didn't build nearly as many then as they do today. There are a heck of a lot more people today. We have often seen examples that looked to be a waste of time and money to restore...

    Stuck distributor

If oil sender, etc.., is out of the way, crowbars, one each side, might draw it out. You would need a helper.

    318 starts then dies

There is a white ceramic box mounted with coil. It is electric choke assist. When it goes bad it can rob current from everything else trying to run on the same single switched 12-volt wire in the engine bay. So if it is still there, unplug it. EPA wanted it but you dont need it. Choke still...

Testing the 273 on the dyno....

OK, so sassy grass probably does have another name under the same Chrysler org. I can't know or remember it all. cheers

Testing the 273 on the dyno....

OK, I misspoke. Its same with the high impact paint color names. Sassy Grass versus Sublime green. Very little difference. I recall choosing Lemon Twist over Top Banana to repaint a 71 Gremlin. Tomato, tom-ah-to LOL

Testing the 273 on the dyno....

Yeah, every mfgr built a base 2-barrel, whatever CID, then jacked it up and gave it a special name. Chryslers 273 was Commando.

I need help finding the wire that goes to the pin on the manifold near distributor...

There are a couple of brown wires in the engine bay and they have confused some owners. One is ignition and the other is washer pump. Only 1 gray wire in the engine bay and it is oil sender. Only 1 purple wire and it is temp sender. You'll find several blue wires. All are branches from the same...

    sending unit location

If your a-body has a warning lamp for oil pressure, that sender is a bit smaller than the sender for a oil gauge. Either way, the connecting terminal that goes on that sender is/was rarely insulated. This caused different problems with the different models. Aftermarket does offer a insulated...

    retorque heads to solve issue?

And some of this is relative to materials used. At my age I have lived through reuse OEM head bolts and and the one use head bolts. The one use... once its stretched, it continues to stretch. Thus, one use. I like to think quality hardware like ARP studs are capable of retorque. ARP might...

The Saga of a Small Block Fan Shroud

The sad part is the 614 or other 049? i forget, shroud might have bolted right in. We'll never know. Keep a good motor support on left side. If that biscuit turns loose the fan will eat the shroud.

273 auto trying to find the 'tick'

There are a lot of places where a tick noise can come from. The flap in the right manifold is one of them. Exhaust gas pressure constantly changes from one bank to the other. This thread reminds me of a episode of Andy Griffin. The entire car was disassembled and put back together inside the...

    Crank pulley hole alignment question

and that is a aftermarket "one size fits all" part. Same applies to a headlight switch. Replacement will have a tang for a ground wire whether your model has a wire to put there or not.

    Crank pulley hole alignment question

yep, forged cranks and later cast cranks are different. Just use a rat tail file to elongate the one hole, install the bolt, and carry on. The tiny amount of balance change is sooo close to the center that it can't make a difference.

    Valve Cover Question

My 67 273 value covers have some flimsy sheet metal retainers for wires that go to alternator and temp sensor. 2 limbs on retainer. One of each 2 already broken off. In the trunk are some white plastic harness retainer thingys made for a single sheet metal tang. Those worked great in the engine...

318 Can't keep fuel in filter, stalls when hot.

My 67 273 2 brl. did the same thing. Repeating cycle viewed in plastic filter once the engine was hot. Took a while to realize the filter never was actually empty. It was full of vapor. Carb bowl was too. When the needle would open the vapor would go and some liquid fuel would come into the...

    No oil pressure at idle

When I worked for Ford dealer, owners would trade in fairly nice 3 and 4 yr old F150s. When we started to get them ready for resale we would find "no heat". Then we would discover the thermostat had been removed, to keep the oil warning lamp off, for higher trade in value. It's a fairly well...
