Solid Transmission Mount - for '68 A Body

904 Question What is This Hole Doing Here?

You're welcome. Glad I could remember something from transmission class and rebuilding one. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

904 Question What is This Hole Doing Here?

I believe there is a sheet metal baffle behind it...it's a vent. "Sometimes", a plug is put in and a vent is put on the tailshaft housing on top.

    "slip over" housing ends?

    "slip over" housing ends?

Grant, thank-you for the explanation. It just "seemed" easier to slip them on and weld but after your description I understand why that would not be the best way to do it. Guess I was looking for quick and easy...which might end up with more headaches in the end. Thanks again! Bob

Help shifter or trans is hanging up???

Gear lube or ATF fluid in trans? A friend had his redone and the rebuilder recommended ATF. Thought in past readings that was not going to work. Whatever the problem, hope it's simple.

    518 in an A body

could "drop" the center link, cut at each side and drop it with rectangular tubing(?), drill holes in sides and put the center link ends in. I can draw it better than I can explain it! there is probably a picture somewhere. done maybe for a BBC in a Chevy II?

    518 in an A body

are there any upper ball joints that have longer shanks? possibly in the oval track parts? the spacers are not more than 1/2"... reading about that trans crossmember, there is no mention of spacing the k-frame. if you were to use the 67-72 K-frame, use a thinner engine insulator. or fabricate one.

    518 in an A body

I spoke with Chris at US Car Tool yesterday about the 518 cross member. He stated clearly the sheet metal in the tunnel would not have to be removed with the use of their Crossmember. I asked him if they have additional pictures of the tranny installed or how many total cars their shop has...

    518 in an A body

I get it now. IF the whole brace had to be redone with it in the stock mount location, it might look like a 4WD with a transfer case hanging underneath there. I've got an A518 in the back of the garage but no A-bodies to wiggle it into. I'll keep watching and see what the outcome is. IF you had...

Is the transmission mount lower on the trans itself? Not trying to be my usual difficult self but it seems if you lowered both and could get away without notching anything, it would be a win-win! But that is just my thought, not actual experience. I'll be quiet now and listen and learn. Thanks...

440 with a stick and bad judgement

8-3/4 should be fine in a lite Dart...it'll just be spinning tires. THEN when it breaks, you can get the Dana. I beat my fine spline 4-speed,8-3/4 340 Dart and nothing broke. Even side stepping the clutch. And when it had slicks on it, it would bog but not spin the tires. In fact, that 8-3/4...

    A-904 Pump front seal replacement.

is the trans vent for the 904 up front? or is it toward the back on the tailshaft housing? for some reason, I picture a piece of sheetmetal over an opening that acts as the vent.

big bolt pattern 8 3/4 rear

they were 4-1/2" bolt pattern.the parts were listed at one time in the original? DC catalog. or maybe in the brake section of the chassis manual. and technically i guess no BP 8-3/4 came "from the factory" in an A-body.
