360 Magnum Daily Driver (but fun too!!!)

DDG Jamie just posted this on his channel. Great content for anyone looking to do a Magnum EFI swap. I think Jamie is a member here but I can't remember his handle.

360 Magnum Daily Driver (but fun too!!!)

It easily fit in my 70 Swinger, using a 68/69 unsilenced air filter. Keep in mind those Magnum throttle bodies are not nearly as tall as a carb. This pic is obviously when in was work in progress, but the engine is mounted. If you zoom in you should be able to see that there's definitely room...

360 Magnum Daily Driver (but fun too!!!)

I have factory EFI on a 5.9 in my Dart, and I came here to say what others have said in recent posts. For a daily driver you should seriously consider the factory Ram / Ram Van EFI. Using the factory EFI you will save of a ton of money over getting a Holley Terminator X, and if you wanted to...

    Zinc oil additives

My Dodge is a roller engine so I don't think too much about ZDDP for that car, but in my 85 Celica Supra I use Mobil1 0w-40 full synthetic. It's on the shelf in the local parts stores and is not expensive. I would use the 15w-50 if I could find it locally, more for the extra viscosity than the...

What could cause this? 360 problems ####update####

Here's how the setup looks on the 5.9 Magnum I put into my car a couple years back. I could see how someone might line up the dot from the keyway instead of the correct one. I suppose the manufacturer could also screw up and simply not put the dot on the crank sprocket, leading the builder to...

    Making Power 318

Speaking of exhaust, that could be another reason why it's a dog. If the mice have built a condo inside the exhaust / mufflers it will run like crap.

    Factory eco injection.

Yeah, I saw that. That's why I said the Magnum retrofit option would be cheapest for "most of us", and I also didn't suggest you just grab the Magnum engine at the same time. EFI is pretty expensive for anyone, but shipping is obviously a killer for you. Being in Canada I'm a lot closer to...

    Factory eco injection.

OE Magnum wouldn't be that hard. Here's an adaptor for the crank sensor: 3.9/5.2/5.9 ENGINE - Crank Sensor Adapter - HiPoTek There are reasonably simple solutions to any of the other issues that would come up. For most of us, OE Magnum would be the cheapest option to get MPFI on a small...

    Making Power 318

You can't make power with a 318, they're junk and power is impossible with those. Just kidding! But some guys actually believe that and will convince you to pull the 318 for a 360. That's nonsense, keep the 318 (unless it's bad) and have fun with it. Before you do anything, listen to...

Port my current M1 single plane or install the RPM Air Gap?

I just re-watched the episode. The cam was not stock, but small when viewed through a performance lens: Comp 212° / 218° @ 0.050. The engine had stock heads, 1 ¾ primary tube headers, and of course electric water pump on the dyno. Stock 5.9 cams were a little different over the years, but...

Port my current M1 single plane or install the RPM Air Gap?

Yeah, I agree. I would bet my house that Mopar Performance didn't sponsor the episode on the back of their M1 dual plane, and we already know the Edelbrock Air Gap is pretty much the gold standard for dual plane small block manifolds anyway. The only thing we really learned in that episode is...

Port my current M1 single plane or install the RPM Air Gap?

I just re-read your post and now realize your M1 is the single plane. I'm pretty sure they used the dual plane M1 in that test, so definitely not as accurate a comparison.

Port my current M1 single plane or install the RPM Air Gap?

The Engine Masters crew did a Magnum intake shootout a couple years ago, starting with stock EFI manifold then going to M1 on a carb, then RPM Air Gap on a carb. I took the following from someone else's forum post on ramforum.com: "Now for the spoiler, and these numbers are directly taken from...

    318 MAX fuel economy builds?

Yeah, I'm not sure how much of an impact it would make. Personally I've never tried a hotter stat for economy; only colder ones for power. My car runs a solid 180 even in super hot weather so I could try a 195 thermostat without any issue, but I won't. Something about seeing that gauge at 180...

    318 MAX fuel economy builds?

Yeah, torque converter can definitely impact mileage. In the case of @motorpirate's Durango any my Dart we're locked up on the highway, but the OP will definitely have to consider TQ. Years ago my car used to have a 904 (or maybe it was a 998 or 999?) out an 85 5th Avenue. It had the...

    318 MAX fuel economy builds?

Well that gives me something to shoot for! Maybe your later OBD2 computer does a better job of controlling the fuel and timing than my 1994 OBD1 computer does. I know it controls the transmission between gears 1, 2, and 3 whereas mine is old school hydraulic control in the first 3 gears, but...

    318 MAX fuel economy builds?

Yeah, I totally agree, there's much more to milage. Your wife's 10 mpg is what I would expect from a lead foot driver. And you getting up to 18 doesn't seem impossible under ideal conditions. But 22 MPG?? Some other factors impacting the mileage when I got my best of 19.6 mpg: ☆ As you...

    318 MAX fuel economy builds?

This is a ton of great information. I don't mind reading a long post, but to @rumblefish360's point, proper paragraphs are key for me. The one thing I think most guys don't consider enough with fuel economy is the bit about parasitic losses. Over the years I have put some thought into...

    318 MAX fuel economy builds?

Initially I had the OD and lockup controlled by adjustable pressure switches, but I didn't have any vacuum switches for kickdown / unlock. I had it set to upshift into OD at 48 mph and it would automatically downshift back into 3rd at about 45 mph. Lockup was set at 55 mph which would...

    318 MAX fuel economy builds?

You can't use the factory pcm to *only* control the transmission because it wants too much data. Well, I suppose it's possible, but by the time you put in the effort to set up a vehicle speed sensor, throttle position sensor, crank sensor, and maybe a MAP sensor you might as well go full EFI...

    318 MAX fuel economy builds?

Factory Magnum. All the parts are high-end, like a cap and rotor with brass terminals, Accel coil, etc, but nothing exotic. Car runs awesome, almost too good actually. With the EFI and computer controlled OD transmission the drivetrain doesn't really have a vintage car personality anymore.

    318 MAX fuel economy builds?

Yup, that's the way to do it. When I say I got 19.6 mpg on the highway, that's (almost) how it was done. I filled up at a station just off the highway, got to my destination which is about a mile off the highway, then the next day drove about 2 miles to fill it up.

    318 MAX fuel economy builds?

I have no idea how some of you guys are getting 20+ mpg on an old carbureted V8. I'm measuring my MPG super closely, and I have to wonder if everyone else is doing the same. I fill up the car, log every mile I drive, fill it up again, and calculate accordingly based on distance driven and fuel...

    Backfire on deceleration?

@vegasanthony did you ever resolve this issue? I just fixed mine. TL/DR: it was the EFI tune. I put in the 46rh so now my revs are super low on deceleration, but that didn't fix it. There was less popping because less engine deceleration, but it was still there. The 46rh was using pressure...

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

As others have said, it looks like it needs to be bored. Whether or not you do that depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for cheap and quick, hone it as best you can and throw it back together with the new rings and bearings. If you want expensive and if you have a lot of...
