    MSD distributor tuning

One silver heavy, and one silver light. Revved it well above anything that I would ever be driving it. I dont have a tach, but it was screaming. Guessing well over 3000. My dial back timing light never went past 30* I think I need to go to the light saver and blue springs and hope the timing...

    MSD distributor tuning

So, I had both weights off when I changed the bushing and they move freely. I bought a new adjustable timing light for this to check against my old, non-adjustable one and both read the same. I revved the motor pretty high and would not go past 30* . The distributor is relatively new <5000 miles...

    MSD distributor tuning

I was thinking this with the springs. I tried this before with the edelbrock and the valves pinged badly and I put the heavily spring back in. With the new Holley, I think I will be able to get away with it. Actually, it would ping at 10* when I ran the edelbrock carb. One of the many reasons...

    MSD distributor tuning

No I have 15 initial and another 15 Mechanical. 30* total. Will not go higher until vacuum is applied then goes to 50*. I replaced the blue bushing with the silver and I got more total timing now, from 44* with vacuum advance. This is why I think the heavy spring may be holding me back.

    MSD distributor tuning

I forgot to mention as well. Anything over 15* initial the thing will ping when hot when giving it a slight push on the throttle. I'm using autolite 64 plugs. It helps reduce the detonation. I recently changed from a 1406 Edelbrock to a 650 Holley spreadbore. Just by doing that I was able to...

    MSD distributor tuning

God morning all! My 87 Ramcharger has a MSD ready to run distributor in it. It's a stock 318 other than dual exhaust and 4bbl. I just cant get more than 30* Mechanical advance out of it. Initial is at 15* and with vacuum it go to 50*. I changed the stop bushing from 21 to 25*. The springs I...

    Ramcharger electrical troubles

Yes and no. I am waiting on parts to arrive. New headlight and ignition switches. They had some questionable spots on them so I ordered new ones. I got the alternator changed today and its changing now. The weather has not been cooperative this week and haven't gotten the fusible links changed...

    Ramcharger electrical troubles

I took the alternator to the parts store to have tested and it was no good. It had zero output volts. I will have a new one on Monday. I'm amazed that my MSD was firing at this point. The battery must have had just enough to trigger the module. Thanks again!

    Ramcharger electrical troubles

Thanks all! I spent about half day on it today. My plan was to bring it in the garage but when I went to start it the battery had 0.0 volts. I left the interior light on. Learned this after hooking up the battery charger. Actually kept tripping the breaker in the charger until I turned off the...

    Ramcharger electrical troubles

I love the FSM! It has been the best $25.00 I had spent on my Ramcharger. It definitely eliminates a lot of guesswork out of it.

    Ramcharger electrical troubles

Agreed. That's what I found when I peeled the plastic sheath back. Going to replace the fusible links next.

    Ramcharger electrical troubles

So the orange fusible link feeds the ignition switch. #16 DB feeds the headlight switch. I'll be making a trip to Napa tomorrow for more fusible link.

    Ramcharger electrical troubles

Found a few things at the battery. I ran a new ground from battery to body. #8 Wire from positive terminal into main harness was all cracked and exposed. I heat shrunk it. #14 fusible link needed replacement. Still carried current though. Still didn't fix anything, but I feel better that I...

    Ramcharger electrical troubles

Thanks! I have an 87 FSM I was looking through last night. I'm going to clean and solder a few ground connections and then check under the dash if its still acting up. Thanks, I'll report back later on.

    Ramcharger electrical troubles

I was thinking this as well. Looked at my battery ground to body at the buttsplice. I will cut it and solder it today after work. It looked dirty to me. I will actually clean any ground I see. I was looking through my FSM for it and it showed several locations and I will check them all. In have...

    Ramcharger electrical troubles

Good evening folks! I need your brains again. My 87 ramcharger is mad at me for being parked outside while the Duster is taking its garage space... I have a strange electrical gremlin . Yesterday morning on my way to work, my turn signals weren't working. The dash light would light, but not...

    Ammeter bypass

My ammeter doesn't work on my Duster for whatever reason. I unbolted it and spliced them together with a 30a fuse. Is the fuse needed? I don't know but that's what I did.

    E3 spark plug inconsistency

Exactly! I was driving home yesterday and the ***** started instantly vibrating like it tossed the wheel weights or a belt slipped in a tire. They are in the trash already. Gonna give the. Bosch double platinum a try at .90c each

    E3 spark plug inconsistency

That's where they are headed too. I swear I have one where the porcelain around the electrode is cracked.

    E3 spark plug inconsistency

I'm kinda that too. I got them on a rock auto closeout for $.80 each, so I'm in them cheap enough

    E3 spark plug inconsistency

Just to kill a few minutes, I pulled the plugs on my ramcharger. These have less than 600 miles on them. Every plug had a different wear pattern on them. This is an example of #6 & #8 cylinders.

Duster won't fire in cranking position.

Thank you! I do have a factory diagram, but it doesn't show the ignition circuit like this.

Duster won't fire in cranking position.

Thanks! I briefly thought about the ignition switch. I do have another one I can swap out of the old steering column.

Duster won't fire in cranking position.

I swapped it and still does the same thing with both ballast resistors. I even ran jumper wires to eliminate the ballast. No luck with it either.

Duster won't fire in cranking position.

I got the car 4 years ago as a shell. Had no wiring or anything. I've been piecing it together since then. Just got to the point for starting the car for the first time today. Everything is new except for the wire harnesses.

Duster won't fire in cranking position.

Finally got to the point of starting my 73 Duster. 318, with factory ignition and ECU. I have a 4 pin ballast and also a 4 pin ECU. It only gets spark in the RUN position. Nothing in the START position. Am I missing something? I thought that a 4 pin ecu needed a 2 pin ballast, and a 4 pin...

    ECU/ballast wiring questions

Thanks all! I'm gonna give it a whirl, and may eventually change over to HEI. For now, I'm just trying to get the car running with what I already have.

    ECU/ballast wiring questions

73 Duster with a slant harness, but has a smallblock in it now. I have a 4 pin ECU, but the harness is for a 4 pin ballast. Don't I have to install a 2 pin ballast since I'm running a 4 pin ECU? If so, do I need to either jump one set of the resistor terminals, or tie them all together at the...

    Msd vs. HEI distributors

Thanks! I think I'll just leave well enough alone then. Maybe I'll sell the MSD distributor.
