    Engine dies when warm

Thanks. At the start of my apprenticeship, although I had adjusted plenty of valves, the first coupla slants didn't turn out well. My mentor told me to do 11 and 20 from then on. I did notice the difference, so did the vehicle owners. trivia .

Did this problem exist before you adjusted the valves ?

What's the best way to find a dead cylinder?

We're it mine, I'd have a friend jump in, fire it up, put it in low, brakes hard on. - give it a buncha gas, and load it up, heavily. It should be missing badly, by your description. Start pulling plug wires, it should be very evident which 1 or 2 cyls are not working. Could be head gskt...

What's the best way to find a dead cylinder?

Check/listen for a vacuum leak, plug any hoses to carb. Wiggle carb for loose bowl/base, tighten base gskt bolts . Good luck

    Oil pan gasket tips?

Throw the reg RTV in the garbage, - use a few pea sized dabs of the "RightStuff" where the gaskets meet. Don't goop the **** outta it . As mentioned, rotate crank to get the most clearance to put pan back in .

Nice thing about the /6, you can turn the idle down to about 400 rpm to adjust the valves running .

    Troubleshooting Head Components

In my first post I mentioned suspecting a couple cyls losing fluid quickly. With #4 sucking oil as it was, the oil flooding the guide likely causing a tarry substance to be blasted behind the rings every power stroke. The cylinders will be tapered and the rings are likely stuck in their grooves...

    Troubleshooting Head Components

I have 5 gal pail of solvent for cleaning. If you have any light oil, varsol, paint thinner, kerosene, diesel. It was just a thought, and a habit for me . I pass on what I can with the time left. Others might learn .

    Troubleshooting Head Components

After separating the head, there is very often coolant and other crud your going to scrape off, will get into the oil. New oil and filter was a given in my mind. No wiping should be nec. No "don't" to the solvent, helps loosen the crap on the piston, and now you know something you didn't, lol...

    Troubleshooting Head Components

No, I do it on V-8s as well. It's just to get an idea of ring seal while your doing other stuff. If you get one that disappears quickly, it's near impossible to do them all at once, so rotate and refill, just noting as you go by. Ideally they'll hold fluid evenly for a good long while. If one...

    Troubleshooting Head Components

If that was in my shop, I'd position the pistons in a manner to be able to pour an inch or little more of clean solvent in each cylinder. See how long it takes to drain a cylinder. I wouldn't be surprised if one or two of those lost fluid very quickly, and some way later, some may hold fluid...

    Manifold Heater for Cold Climates

Not a slant. 1947 boat Engine

Older boats like that sometimes had raw water cooling, inlet thru hull fitting to pump to engine, some had keel cooler, a pipe running next to the keel, or a heat exchanger and pumps . Pix will help . There is often a way to rig cooling to garden hose, imagination may be required. Find a pump...

Not a slant. 1947 boat Engine

Take the spark plugs out and squirt some oil in the cyls, to lube and to help seal the rings for compression. Then spin it on the starter to get excess oil outta cyls preventing hydroloc . Check for spark, install plugs, check fluid levels, prime carb, cross fingers, go for it . If it fires...

Advice on no start. What I have done.

Some of those point sets had insulators/plastic washers, that if out of place, would ground the circuit, shorting the feed wire, and making it in-operable. Not sure if it applies here, a pic might be helpful ?

I was your second postin this thread, lotta money, time, imagination, and desire, Take a break, go look at the feasibility of moving the steering link as I mentioned. The Slants work well on their side, can you not lay it over somewhat similarly? You're nowhere done yet .

What kinda starter are you using. My son's jeep has a little Denso starter in it. Valve Lash - Hot or cold?

I know when I started my apprenticeship, about 1/2 of the first dozen /6s I adjusted valves on, came back with the customer not happy. They seemed fine to me after the test drive. (Every car). Mentor told me to set to 11/22, - seldom a prob after that .
