    4.5 bolt pattern is definitely stronger,and it has the 1/2 studs too.also I've had a lot of small bolt 8.75s with the 489 case in them.

    Man..I would just try to find a better one...I too have welded around the pin and beat the crap out of them when I had no funds to buy a better one tho with very good results.

    We run 833 ods in a couple of b bodies and they're great for interstate driving.my buddy has a 69 gtx with 440,aluminum case 833 od,and 2.76 rear and loves it...also beats on it occasionally and it's been fine for 3 years now.

    if they're in there good and you have the factory tapered bearings you should be fine.if you you use the sealed bearings the spacers do need to be removed. mike bee

    you need to be aware of the small ones when changing centers...they will sometimes come out,even when you just pull an axle. it could just be me tho,i'm ruff on all my cars! mike bee

    that's some good info,but i'm sure i read in an old book somewhere about a detroit locker being used in the very earliest 8.75 rears....i have a 4.10 that has a dl in it and it is a 983 or 985 housing and i think 58 ring gear.i pulled it out of an old truck...didn't look like it had been into as...

    I run 2.76 in my 77 van with a 318/727.... runs great and milage is great also! 318 is out of a 76 duster and has only 52,000 miles, I put a double roller in, ld4b intake with a holley 450 and a set of hooker headers and rear is a 741 with an old style sure grip. I think with a 340 in ur dart...

    in around 78 or 79 is when mopar stopped putting the console bumps on the tail shaft(of trucks and vans) but it's an easy fix.just get a tail shaft off any long shaft 727...big or smallblock,65 to 78 that has the mounting bumpholes. mike bee

    my guess is chipped spiders in the clutch posi....symptoms match mine and when i pulled mine i could spot chipped teeth through the small openings in the unit. i hope not tho because i have no idea where to get good replacements. good luck!

    yeah,me either.it had a long spring pushing the accumulator down towards the valve body.and the spring between the vb and ac.piston wasn't there.

    i've never heard of em.i just pulled a camper trans apart and it had a small long spring on the case side of the accumulator piston....i just put it back that way,figured it was a part of a shift kit. thanks for the info!

    you can pull the fill plug,shine a tiny mag light in there and finger out what kind of sure grip you have or pull one axle...center pin is way different in cone and clutch...i vote clutch...they do better donuts. btw the 489 cone 3.23 in my 71 road runner has over 100 thousand miles on it and...

    i put a condom on mine and brass caps on the line fittings and plug the lines with rubbers that come on the end of new lines...brake,fuel...whatever. i really put a slip yoke in the tail..it's a good idea to wire it on with bailing wire so it doesn't "slip"out though.

    yeah,the thermobog uses a rod that goes out over the rocker cover...the avs rod works well with a holley.
