Pick a tire/wheel combo you want and build the rearend to work with them. Keep in mind that if you ever go to a big tire down the road, shorter backspacing (i.e., a narrower rearend) could make taking the tires/wheels on and off a lot easier.

I'd certainly use a LU if I was starting from scratch. Since I've already got a 727 and good converter, it was a no brainer for me to go non-lockup.

@1WildRT is right. I purposely sought out a non-lockup 46RH so I can use my current converter, but have an extra gear. They aren't the easiest to find and cores where I'm at when you can find one are pricey.

I'm going 46RH just because I'll be able re-use my current 727 converter. Does the 42RH come in a non lock-up version?

The output shaft does not have a double spline. The yoke doesn't quite make it to the bushing before it stops. It's definitely stopping on the splines. I'm at a loss here. I looked at a bunch of photos of 727 yokes and I'm convinced this isn't a 727 yoke. The 727 splines are much pointier.

From the research I've done, it seems the spline count is the same, but the spline angle is different between the 727 and 518, so to do the swap you'll need a 518 slip yoke. I've noticed some aftermarket yokes are advertised to work for 727 and 518, but I'd bet they just machine extra spline...

I just picked up a non-lockup A518 for my '68 Dart for when I build the 408. I went that route so I can use the Dynamic 9.5" 727 converter that I've already got. It's crazy how much these OD transmission cores go for in my area.

You may be able to find an inexpensive used one. Keep in mind that if you find a short shaft unit for cheap, the shafts can easily be swapped.

Do you have a transtar nearby? Maybe call a local transmission shop and see if they can get them. Looks like the part number is 22232. Any transmission parts supplier should have them.
