Aftermarket ignition ...do you really need one?

Saw this from Chrysler Engineer Dave Zelkowski, had this to say about aftermarket ignition systems- "The ONLY thing they will do for you is lighten your wallet. If there is nothing wrong with the stock ignition components it won't help. If you have some old tired components then it could be a...

A friend hooked his coil up backwards...

I just realized my '82 B2000 had the coil wired backwards. Weird that it would run at all but I put it back to stock and it doesn't run any different...I was hoping that would be the oh **** that was the issue, but its not. Still has a random miss and labors at mandated 650 idle. Only pulling 15...

    Info on FBO ecu unit

I thought it was Constant Velocity Combustion Chamber? No matter, those little motors sung and ran great. We had a 2 speed automatic CVCC and you just mashed on the gas and it went...so simple. And it always started right up. Honda did alot of things right.

Canadian Valiant with Direct Drive Starter

check out a Massey tractor starter. Was brought up once that they used the same style starter. They may have used these forever and still stock 'em. Quite often if one track has an extended land, it was used for assembly and never really uses that portion after its assembled.

    Fried time delay relay?

looks like a bimetallic contactor: it contacts, gets hot, bends open, cools and repeats. try bending the contact so it touches by default. looks to be missing the points?

Anyone have an overcharging alternator fry a battery?

you could pop the vent covers and test for continuity between the + and - plates in the wells. It sounds like your battery may be shorted. you could also start car and remove battery lead but if its full boogie 17V then it may pop some bulbs. Id take the alternator and bench test it first before...

    Best mini starter

Grab a stock one out of a yard and replace the $4 contacts. I've seen 2 Kv ratings (usually a short and a long case) but Im not sure if that's even an issue as I had a stock RAM Denso starter kicking over a 451 auto with absolutely no problem.

Anyone wired a self latching or other type of anti-theft kill switch ?

Wire the white wire of an electronic distributor fed MSD to a ground switch, that thing will never start. Give the MSD some time and it wont start either! Flame me......I had a Carter electric pump on my 65 back in the day and I had to turn it on manually. Forgot it and the car started...

    Engine electrical questions

nothing exotic? Stock will work fine on your app. Your best bang for buck in that is a higher rated coil. How did those spitfires work on the 360 sized exhaust port?

Where is the damage? In bay or under dash? Hot alt is a full boogie exciter, Either a hard ground (electronic with an isolated field) or your points regulator is not opening.

    Cool toy.....

Mine was a DIN rail (03 Silverado) where the rear view mirror mounts so I just loosened the grub screw, slid off the GM mirror and slid this one on the windshield rail. Some are strap on, mine was not. You must run the feeds up into the headliner or tuck them out of sight somehow. Maybe even...

    Cool toy.....

This won't clutter a classic interior but will give you GPS navigation, Bluetooth, internet, dash/rear cameras etc. It's a smart rear view mirror. Coil...standing up or laying down?

The way the coolant (oil) settles in the can is obviously designed to be mounted vertically to xompletely civer the coils. You never see a transformer on its side on a pole right? They are the same functional design. Now to mount a coil horizontally probably won't kill it but the design with the...

Who's running an AGM battery in a weekend driver?

Optima batteries must use an AGM mode charger ...OR...just do what others have done and put a Lead acid in parallel and that LA voltage will trip the automatic charger and start charging the optima as well. Lipo batteries have a similar issue when they get low the BMS will open the circuit and...

    Condensor value...reading the pits?

paraphrased from article..."If the condenser is TOO SMALL, it won’t have much effect. You will have a VERY hot spark, but will also have lots of arcing across your points, dramatically shortening their life.." On the flip side..."If your condenser is TOO BIG, it will lower the voltage in both...

    Condensor value...reading the pits?

I thought I read a smart guys description on reading the points to determine what condensor to use, ie. a pit (-) on the stationary side was too low of a condensor value and a mound (+) was too high? if you got the right condensor/coil you had a longer lasting point setup as there would be...

    Time to unveil "Project Blackstone"

PLA burns out on a BBQ right? Make some lost wax (PLA) castings of some weber 3X2 intakes for a slant. I need to get back to my community college to take a course on 3d modeling. All my CAD stuff was 2D AutoCad and VersaCad for my first year and I lost that decades ago.

Battery voltage drops to 5V with negative connected on a Ford Edge

Just start unplugging stuff. PCM first. My 2012 Caravan starter was shot. We took it in and the Kragen tester said it was good. Well, I knew it wasn't so I bought the rebuilt and we put it on the tester and it tested good too but it actually shot out with some force, unlike the old one. Ill take...

    Coil voltage

Only needs about 6-10v in run position to work. Sounds like your run circuit could be very low voltage due to a bad ballast side or worse.
