Looking at a '72 Valiant...what do these cars weigh, or what does your combo weigh?

Well, perhaps I should have meant that it is somewhat larger which would result in the heavier weight. Just one of those things I have in my head. Dusters are lighter than Darts and the 108" wheelbase cars are lighter in the back. The deck lid might be a little longer on a Dart and like I...

Looking at a '72 Valiant...what do these cars weigh, or what does your combo weigh?

For comparison, my Duster weighs 3,060 with a full tank of gas and no driver. All steel, full interior, iron headed small block. The back glass on the Valiant/Dart coupes from the early '70s weighs a lot.

    4.250 crank factory 340 block

Yep sounds like things were poorly assembled. I agree that what you found was alarming and it's good you took it to another shop. I still don't see how 4 bolt caps will solve your issues though. Good luck with it, let us know how it turns out.

    4.250 crank factory 340 block

I wonder what the symptoms were and why it was pulled apart? I'd like to hear the explanation of how installing 4 bolt main caps will solve uneven bearing wear. Sorry O.P. to sidetrack here, just curious. Maybe it will be pertinent. And yeah, carnage sucks if it's its yours but this is the...

    4.250 crank factory 340 block

Does not sound like a block/cap/strength issue, more like machining/line hone/balance issue. Could even be an oiling issue or something totally unrelated like a misfire or detonation. "Something not right with the wear on the bearings" seems pretty vague and doesn't make you think "oh, this...

    4.250 crank factory 340 block

What happened to yours? Why do you 'need' 4 bolt caps? Retrofitting 4 bolt caps to a 2 bolt block is probably not worth the time or money and will never be as strong as a block designed with them already. Think about all the machine work involved and you're only getting an extra angled bolt...

    6K? Bah! That's nothin'. I shifted my stock-stroke 340 at 7,200 with 2 bolt mains.

Fix my W2s or go with RHS heads?

Headers are 1 5/8 primary to 1 3/4, not 1 7/8. The more I think about it, the more I think I should just stick with the W2s, ported or not. Hopefully there is no damage beyond the suspected valve, if that's what the noise ends up being. Guess I'd probably be going backwards by switching or...

Fix my W2s or go with RHS heads?

I could be wrong about the headers, I may have the wrong nomenclature. I looked on the TTI site, I can measure the collector diameter to determine which ones I have. The larger diameter have 3.5" collectors as opposed to 3". Looks like I may have the 1 7/8 version based on their pic but who...

Fix my W2s or go with RHS heads?

Kind of trying to avoid a total rebuild though that would ultimately be the best idea. I can replace the heads with the short block still in the car and without taking the timing cover off. Was thinking about new springs but again, I'm getting into more cost. I'd also be getting retainers...

Fix my W2s or go with RHS heads?

Wow, thanks for the detailed reply, Myron. Good info. I appreciate you thinking all that through and typing it out. Here's some more info on the rest of the combo 340, stock stroke aforementioned #810 iron heads not sure on pistons but compression test was around 175-180 psi runs on pump 93...

Fix my W2s or go with RHS heads?

Just priced out valves only, either MP or Ferrea 2.08, gonna be over $430/16 valves, either choice. Does anyone replace only one valve? Like said above, probably needs guides and a valve job. So I'm looking at a couple hundred for each head in machine work. I'm getting close to a grand already...

Fix my W2s or go with RHS heads?

Well, the current combo went a best of 11.97, usually went 12.0. Had a 4.30 gear in it, different ignition, fuel system and suspension. Over the last year, I took a lot of weight out of it, have Caltracs and a 4.10 gear in it now. Before the nosiy valve, I was thinking it would pick up over the...

Fix my W2s or go with RHS heads?

W2s are on the car already. RHS heads are on the shelf so I save on the core charge for those. Basically paying for shipping, prep/valve job, valves, springs etc. I save about $600+ which can go to the intakes, pushrods, gaskets etc. New W2 valves and a valve job will probably be getting...

Fix my W2s or go with RHS heads?

The #5 intake valve on my W2 headed 340 is ticking pretty loudly. I did a compression test a while ago and the #5 cylinder was the weakest by about 30 psi. Oil pressure is good, 60 lbs at start up, goes to about 40 psi when warm. Lash is set to .026" warm. I had it a little tighter before but...

Porting - before or after valve job?

Cool, thanks for the info. Cutting the seats, then porting then valve job seems to make the most sense.

Porting - before or after valve job?

You guys who port your own heads - do you get your valve job done before you start grinding? If so, why? I might be answering my own question here because I am planning to get a set of heads cut for larger valves. But just for discussions' sake, I'd like to hear a general consensus on this...

    Surface rust on cylinder heads

Correct. Guy had a VJ done, then they sat. Heads are covered in a lovely orange - looks to be a little more than the usual 'light film'. I would not sand blast them myself for reasons stated above. Local machine shop offers 'glass peen' service for cylinder heads, might look into that...

    Surface rust on cylinder heads

I have my eye on a set of heads for sale locally, however they're covered in surface rust. What's the best way to get rid of surface rust? Machine shop hot tank? Wire brush? Thanks for any input. - Greg

    Rhs 360x

Hughes Engines just announced they have a 1.65 shaft mount rocker arm for Magnum heads. See them here. This is relevant to this thread because if you bought the RHS/Indy 360 Magnum heads, you could start off with a relatively mild cam which did not require monster springs (read: extra...

    Rhs 360x

What is your use anyway? I think a few points have been illuminated - some guys think that re-engineering valves is 'no big deal' to the average buyer. I'm an average buyer. Sounds like a real pain in the *** to me and esepecially for whoever would be doing the work - not me. That's money...

    Rhs 360x

I'd love to see that combo! Like I said before, and this is really all I'm saying here, is that I doubt anyone trying to make more than 525 hp from a small block Mopar would be using these heads until the valve spring issue is sorted out.

    Rhs 360x

Not sure who you think the RHS heads are aimed at but to me, they are marketed as a street machine head for guys who want 450hp or so. Even that level might be a stretch with the valve spring issue. This is what makes the other heads look like a better deal until they figure out the problem...

    Rhs 360x

Hmmmm... most people that run them seem to do so with a great deal of success. I don't really recall ever having spoken to anyone or read much on the boards that say the Eddy's are not a bolt-on deal. I guess if you're trying to go 9 seconds with them maybe but for most guys, OOTB Eddys are the...

    Rhs 360x

Exactly, anything can be done, but why go through the expense? Once you go through all the machining and valve set up, might as well just buy a set of Eddys. Seems like a pretty bad design flaw to work around. I think I'd give up some port flow to be able to use the proper valve gear and let...
