With that bearing surface cut I say scrap it.

    Gears

I'd go no bigger than 3.55's. My Duster has 3.55's with 28" tires. I can be rolling along at 20 or 30, nail the throttle & all hell breaks loose. Although I have a stroker small block that thinks it's a big block.

    (489) 3.23:1 to 3.55:1

The biggest headache will be setting pinion depth in my opinion. I used "hollowed out" inner & outer pinion bearings that would slide on & off while I swapped out shims to get the right pinion depth. I used the bearings that came off the pinion & used a stone on a drill to "hollow" them out...

Which Clutch up to 450hp Street car with some drag racing?

Brewers recommends Mcleod MC75209 for small blocks up to 550hp for $411.42. They don't show an assembly for 350hp-450hp. I paid all of $200 for my clutch and diaphram pressure plate custom made for me by a local clutch retailer. My 414 stroker makes 511ft;lbs. I'm amazed how at it's held up...

Help on shortening a Dana 60 truck housing

Although I didn't do the work myself, I sent a 9.25 axle to Moser to have it narrowed. I simply measured the distance from the spot where the axle housing goes into the "center" housing to the outside of the axle flange. Luckily they were exactly the same. I took a total A-Body measurement and...

    Automatic or manual?

You answered your own question. You prefer a manual so get a manual. I have a bad knee and hip but I'll be damned if I let that stop me from rowing my own gears. Hell, it's good exercise for those bad joints. I'd switch to a hydraulic clutch though. It's all about the fun factor for me...

    rear axle

The strongest 8.25 was the '97 and up axle. Chrysler increased the spline count from 27 to 29 with a larger axle shaft. You could swap in a Dakota differential and upgrade the axles.

Giving up on 8-3/4" rear end

I did the same thing 69MOPE did. I sent my 9.25 housing to Moser thru UPS. They installed 8 3/4 ends with with their alloy axles. You swap in a new sure grip differential to make it a sure grip. To be more specific, it's the part the ring gear bolts to if you're not sure. Try Randy's Ring &...

    Rear end upgrade??

I read in the forums on here that a 8" from a furd ranger 4.0 would work. About stock A body length. Worth a look. Or, you could get a 87-96 Dakota rear, get it narrowed and just buy new axles or get a stock set cut and resplined The spring perches are 43" center to center from what I...

    3.91 to 3.55

    A simple formula is to take the mph X gear ratio / (tire diameter X 3). For example, 65mph X 3.55 /(26 X3) 78= 2484 rpm. 65 X 3.91 / 81 = 3137 rpm.

    8.75 Rear Gear Change Question

    Whats everyone running for gears?

I'm running 3.55 in Mopar 9.25 in my Duster stroker.

    Rear end pricing

I agree with Brian T. Unless that's a brand new center section, brand new axles with bearings, with receipts, I would not buy it. Taking a huge risk without a warranty. Spend that kind of money and "hope" it's right? Don't think so!
  17. srduster340

    rear end question

There might be a tab held on by one of the center section bolts that will give you the gear ratio. Sometimes they are on backward.

    360 truck rear-end compatible?

With that much power you can't go cheap on the rear. Leave that to the chivvy guys who puke axle shafts at the track. I have no doubts that the Mopar 9.25 can handle 550-600hp. The only thing I regret is I didn't install a Detroit locker and Richmond gears. I got a great deal on an Auburn sure...

    360 truck rear-end compatible?

I used a 9.25 axle from a Ram in my Duster. Had to have it cut down to standard A-body length. I purchased Moser axles with 8 3/4 ends to get rid of the C clips. Make sure you get an early rear with 3" axle tubes because late rears had 3.5" axle tubes. Mine bolted right up to my SS leaf...

    8 3/4 build questions

I'd get rid of the factory housing and get a new Moser unit with their high strength axles with 3" studs and factory style bearings and retainers, billet side adjusters, Detroit Locker sure grip, Richmond gears, aluminum 489 center section due to it's larger pinion, 1350 billet pinion yoke. Just...

    A518 vs 727

The 518 no doubt. The only disadvantage is the 727 has no overdrive. They're the same freakin' transmission! As DarTT stated this is going into a TRUCK and not an A-body! Should drop in. Dodge did not change the basic frame architechure until the new Ram came out in '94.

    Info request: 7.25 gear ratio

You will only need to swap the speedometer gear at the transmission to compensate for the difference in ratios. They have to match tire size too. I think there is a formula on Yearone's website. Not sure though.

    which 8.25? how to tell?

You will have to change the carrier for a larger gear set. If you do you can get the stronger 29 spline carrier for a '98 and above 8.25 axles. The axles were larger too but you will have to buy new ones. Another option is most Jeeps with this axle had 3.21 or 3.55 limited slip rears.
  26. srduster340

    Gear Ratio

Beware because some 657 rears actually had 8 inch ring gears! I'd measure the ring gear to be sure. Could be a swapped gear set.

Help With Rear End Gear Pattern Check

I agree with Gmachinedartgt. You really need some white or yellow gear marking compound to get a clear read on the pattern. This is critical. You want the pattern somewhat centered left to right but slightly toward the outside. If the gears are used check the coast side only. For new gears...
