Does anybody know where I can find a new or rebuilt 10 vane water pump for an early style 273? I took a chance with an 8 vane and it overheats in traffic now.

A waterpump probably won't cure the problem. What thermostat do you have? Has the cooling system been flushed? Are you still using the original radiator? Has it been cleaned or rodded? Any engine work or modifications done lately?

The rule of thumb - your radiator is dirtier than you think.

Try overdriving your 8 vane pump of your think its not moving enough water with a smaller pulley or larger crank pulley. You can also tack weld a anti cavitation plate onto your 8 vane and give it maybe more volume. But I'd check timing, mixture and radiator first

I really don't get you guys. Old 10 vane water pump, no overheating. New 8 vane water pump, overheating. It's not rocket science. To everyone else...thank you :)

There are a few places in Hemmings Motor News that will rebuild your old water pump if you still have it. These are old school places that have been in business a long time. Better off rebuilding what you have rather than buying Chinese junk.

I have done a LOT of experimenting with water pumps. As far as the cause of o'heating, there is something faaaar more important than the number of impeller blades, their shape or their size. It is how well they fit in the cavity they reside in. If there are large gaps around the impeller, the water has an escape route; it just gets churned up/recycled, but is not captured & pumped through the engine. I have often welded a 'donut' onto open impeller blades to capture the coolant & it gives a noticeable reduction in temp.
This might not be feasible with all pumps, but something to look at/check out.

Just in case you can't find a pump.

Never heard of 10 vane pump. 6 and 8 are the common ones on a mopar small block. And I had the same issue on my 78 fury 318. Original was 8 vane went to 6 vane and it ran hotter. As soon as I replaced the water pump.
I had had the radiator boiled out 3-4 times while trying to figure out what was going on. I bought a 3 row champion radiator and a flow kooler water pump. Now it runs almost too cool.
I think that it would have started running hot soon even if I hadn't had to replace the water pump. If everything is marginal it don't take much to make it run hot.

I know. I can't find a pic of a ten vane anywhere. I'll try to dig up the old pump and take some pics to post. Looks like Flow Kooler might be the way to go. They seem to be quite reasonable too. Thanks
