Good evening. I just acquired a beautiful 1964 Barracuda and wanted to come join some like-minded "A-Body" fans to share, laugh, and learn with. I've been a painter and restorer since I was 9 and I've owned more than 150 cars, currently have 11. Thanks for having me.

Information from the person I bought this car from. Feel free to correct anything that seems unlikely so I have a better understanding of what I have. Thanks in advance for the knowledge you can share with me. This is my first Barracuda.

"1964 barracuda only 23,443 built
273 engines rebuilt have all records, only 4,727 came with this option
desirable Commando 273-cu.in. V-8 engine
automatic torqueflite transmission
power steering upgrade option (rare)
disc brakes all newly replaced
air conditioning works amazing (very rare)
new aluminum radiator, also has existing original that goes with car.
transmission serviced and new fluids.
All new exhaust
new headers factory
Sure-Grip differential
Suspension Front: torsion bar; Rear: leaf springs.
body on this car is clean
Gold on gold only five cars came with this package. (super rare)

Fact: It is considered the first made muscle car. Came out just weeks before Mustang

Was owned by one person for 55 years and posthumously sold out of his collection. Rare find
The rarity of this car is super high. Most likely One of One in existence."

I removed the unverifiable claim that this car could be "1 of 1" because it can not be confirmed, and is unimportant to me and others as I love the car as it's a very nice example. Thank you all, again, for your compliments and the information you are sharing with the forum.

Welcome to FABO. Stunning, my favorite generation thanks for the pic.

Hi. I hope so. I don't like talking out my tailpipe and I'm looking forward to hearing from resident experts. Knowledge is power. Take care.
It looks like a Commando trim was added to the stock 2 barrel air cleaner. I would get into all the differences but I am in the middle of a bathroom remodel.

You will want to post a clear photo of the VIN tag (minus the last few numbers if you wish) and the fender tag. We will be able to find out a lot about your car with those 2 tags.

Friend of mine had a nearly identical car around 1980, but I think his was a slant, too long ago to remember. He also had a few 64 Polaras back then.

I had one just like that when I was 16. It was 273 4 barrel with push button automatic. Drive in movie car back the. Nice ride.

Very nice car. Your VIN is correct for a 1964 Barracuda V8. It was manufactured at the Hamtramck Michigan Plant.

The 235 HP Commando V8 was not available in 1964. The only V8 option was the 273 cu. in, 2 barrel, 180 horsepower engine. Which you have in this car. Someone stuck a “Commando” decal on the 2 barrel air cleaner. Your car should also have a push button automatic transmission.

The A/C in your car would have been dealer installed. Disc brakes (Formula S) and factory-installed air conditioning became available after the start of the 1965 model year, though A/C was not available as an option with the Commando V-8.

Early A Barracudas were Valiant based. In 1964 there was Valiant badging on the right rear facia panel. 1964 was the only year this was done.

I won’t get into all the other descriptive stuff about numbers and rarity. There is definitely some typical questionable AI verbiage in there for sure.

It is commonly reported that approx. 90% of 1964 Barracudas were ordered with the 273 V8.

Enjoy the car!

Below is a photo of a 273 Commando V8 as equipped from the factory in all its glory. The best sounding exhaust system ever!

Thank you for your reply. I did a VIN decoding and knew the 273 Commando was not an engine option in 1964, nor was the "Formula S" designation. I figured the AC was a dealer installed option as well. Can you please tell me your source for the "widely reported 90% were ordered with the 273" information? Thankfully I paid for the condition of the car, and not the questionable "1 of 1" claim. I do believe the car to be rare in this condition. I love the "typewriter torque flight" as my very first car over 50 years, and 150 cars ago was a 1964 Chrysler Newport which also had the typewriter torque flight. Thanks again, I appreciate you taking the time.

My Galen white book says there were 2013 225 slant 6's and 20530 273 2 barrel V8's produced in 1964.

Thank you. What is the exact title, and where can I get a copy of that book? I like to put together a literature collection for each car in my collection. Owner's manuals, assembly manuals, dealer brochures, expert fact books, etc. :-)

Also your Scheduled Production Date is June 15. (SO is 0615)
The Barracudas were released on April 1.

I don't think they are printed any more. You can find them occasionally here, E Bay and at Mopar swap meets.

Thank you. None on eBay at this time. Messaged the seller of the latest copy sold on eBay. If anyone here has one please message me.
You can ask in a Parts wanted ad. Marketplace forums. Someone may have one they would sell.
