Hi All,

I have a 1965 slant with a 904. The tranny was working well until I started into it. It developed a leak (several leaks) and I replaced the pan with a TCI aluminum deep style with that crazy filter extension that blocks off one of the fluid channels. I put it back together and it won't shift into third gear. I called TCI and got nowhere. Now for the complicated part.

I also changed the fluid and flushed out the torque converter. I replaced the motor mounts and tranny mounts with poly units which have changed the location (a little) of the tranny and messed with the kick down linkage a little. I also put a new manifold and carbs on which altered the bell crank position on the linkage.

As I understand it, a mis-adjusted kick down will cause the tranny not to kick down. But could it also cause a no third gear issue? I have adjusted it all the way loose so it will not kick down but still no third gear.

Did the old owner put additive in the fluid that made it work in the short term and my new fluid change could cause this issue?

Is the odd tranny filter adapter causing the issue? Why do they block off the main fluid channel? I noticed the Summit Racing pan has the same adapter with one hole not two.

I have been under the car for a week and thought I would seek advise from you before I remove the pan again (5th time) and remove that tranny filter adapter and bolt the filter an inch higher in the pan and go for a ride?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

The filter adapter/extension you used is for the 66 and up trans that did not have a rear pump. Your trans is a 65 down that has a rear pump. You need a extension for a 65 down trans that has two holes in it. Can you modify that extension, by adding the other hole? You also need a filter that has two holes (65 down). They are different from the 66 up filters.

Why did you even use the deep pan? It is not needed on a stock engine/trans. I would just go back to the stock setup. Just make sure you use the correct filter.

Thanks Charrlie

I bought the deep pan because my old steel pan had been over tightened and was leaking badly.

Thanks for the help. I will get back under today and try to fix things up.
