Lots of work on this car by Herb McCandless, suspension , dog box trans, cage, frames moved in and the holes in inner fenders were rolled nicely

Exactly, small narrow tires and do not lower your front end. We hated them back then, but that was about all that was available.
 
i made my fenderwell headers for the 440 in my 65 dart to dump on the outside of the well near the hood hinges and outer fender so no steering lock issues. not sure why the 'shop bought' ones aren't like that as it's always been an issue.

We ran the largest you could fit and feel acceptable way back with Hooker FWs. I believe the tires on my old SBP Cragars are E-78-14s. Car stances were altered to help as well.
There was a learning curve, especially on right turns, speed bumps, and potholes, lol.
 
It's a Mickey Thompson. I believe it is 26 tall by 15-in diameter on direct drill Cragars. I Don't have any issues steering it other than it's not power steering
