anyone seen this stripe on a 68 Formula S? Appears it is factory.

I think they were pretty common when these cars were new. You rarely see them re-applied after the car is re-painted. Those fugly wide door stripes seem to be popular now.

This one will. It is so unmolested and have all the original documentation and history it needs to go back that way.

they used to have pinstripers that would travel
dealers would pay to dress up a bland car
my buddy who worked at the ford bodyshop said guy showed up like once a month in the 80's
buy the guy supposedly had been doing it siince the 70's

I know an original owner on a 68 coronet RT, it has a dual pinstripe that is painted on. It is coded on the fender tag.

Your stripe looks too low for a factory job.

Pinstriping was very common. It may vary because it was dealer-applied. The factory had documentation for dealers describing the width, placement and color of the striping, but the actual artists might take a little liberty.

Everyone is missing the tag decode....

UBS code is B B where the S code is "B". The decoder says that is a horizontal accent stripe.


That means it was applied at the factory does it not?

Had them on my rag top, not a S, went with the lower strips instead. Car is far from original so went with what I wanted.

That is a Factory Stripe.

Ok, yes.

Looking at the assembly manual (again) I saw another page for the 69, it is lower by a few inches so a different drawing. Nothing shown for 67 other that the over the top sport stripe.

The 1968 brochure unfortunately does not have a pic with the pinstripes, just the lower Formula S body stripes more common on the 1968.

May very well be a painted stripe . Might have been cheaper and faster to have a skilled pin striper paint them on rather than dealing with a dainty little decal . And if it hasn’t started to flake off by now my guess is that it is painted .
We added pin stripes like that to most cars back in the 80s and 90s at the dealer .

Wow! Rare to see those factory painted accent stripes. Most cars were repainted and if pin stripes were put back on, they were never in the right place. I considered adding them to my 68 at one time, but couldn't determing the correct location and arch between the door and the top of the rear quarter. I would take several pictures on both sides with measurments, before you paint the car (especially from the door handle to the upper part of the rear quarter).
