1968 Formula S Side Stripe

Interesting. Looks like a completely different brochure and car. Maybe there are differences between US and Canada brochures.

I know an original owner on a 68 coronet RT, it has a dual pinstripe that is painted on. It is coded on the fender tag.

Your stripe looks too low for a factory job.

See how high up the pinstripe is in the brochure photo? That what I was mentioning in my first post.

Your car is coded for a pinstripe, doesn't mean the stripe on the car now is from the factory

Brochure photos are not an accurate representation of what was done. His car looks closer to the drawings in the assembly manual than the brochure photo.

Alan, do the factory placement drawings suggest how the stripes were to be applied?

Did they indicate a stensil being used or just the location and dimensions of the stripes.

I've read that other manufacturers used a painter on both sides of the vehicles getting stripes to paint the stripes on using stencils(Cadillac) as the vehicle moved through the paint process.

If so, I don't imagine there was much uniformity on where the pinstripes actually landed.

The catalog image of the white fastback with red accent stripes should not be considered accurate. An artist added the stripes for the brochure. The picture was published in other factory literature without the accent stripes. I would actually expect that the photo is a 67 fastback that has been airbrushed to look like a 68.

It doesn't mention a stencil. I have always assumed there was but have nothing concrete.

Although this car is probably a re-paint, I believe it's an original owner car at the time of the picture. It was restored to a high degree of originality.

It sure looks like the brochure picture places the accent stripe too high. The OP's car, this one, and Mary Ann's all show it lower.

That looks like it is under the clear? I will likely just use pin stripe tape at first.

Here's one on Mary Ann's '69 convertible.

Great illustration for showing the location on the 69. On the 68, the accent stripes were above the door handle. The 68 stripes were also above the depression for the gas filler door on the rear quarter. On the 69, the accent stripes stop right at the depression for the gas filler door, and then continue on the other side of the depression.

With this much commentary and interest in that particular stripe option, it is sure to garner a fair bit of attention once you finish the car.

Had them on my rag top, not a S, went with the lower strips instead. Car is far from original so went with what I wanted.

Yep...they are on my 1969 rag top - non Form S car....
