1972 Duster Project

-
Well took the wife and oldest son out on a bird hunt this morning so I didn’t get to the shop until late in the day. Got one side of the front down to bare metal where I took the undercoat off and treated it with rust inhibitor. Sand blasted pulleys and brackets for the 440 I am building to sell.

Nice pics, your hunting area reminds me a little of Mountain Men's "Eustace" who's part of the show is shot in Boone I think. Anyway, looks like fun, were you targeting grouse, pheasant, turkey???

Pheasant, quail, and chukar. There is a preserve about 45 minutes from me. Costs money, but it gets us all out for a day, fresh air, walking, loud noises, and something to eat when we are done.

Took my 12 year old to the shop today and got a lot done. Sorted out motor stuff. Prepped the motor to install in this car. Bolted the 360 to the 904 and got it on the run stand. Need some odds and ends to get it set to make loud noises. Finished working on the inner fender wells, wire wheel, rust preventative, and a light coat of undercoat to finish. I literally am struggling to prevent myself from taking the whole car apart, but I just can’t afford to do that and sell it for a reasonable amount. Blasted a pile more parts and did some painting. Last thing was the air cleaner assembly for the slant. I liked the idea of the gold lid for the Gold Duster...so I got something for that.

Engine bay taken down to prep for paint and motor install. Need to find a parts grille to repair mine or get a whole new unit. The 75 parts grille curves are not the same. Bummer.

Got some work done on the air cleaner assembly while the weather was nice today. Still need another coat on the base but I ran out of light. Should look sweet on top of the leaning tower of power!

Took number 5 to the shop with me today. He was a big helper and we got a lot done on the car. Glad I brought some masks! Started in the trunk. Driver trunk extension replaced. Wire wheeled the snot out it cleaned, prepped, and coated with rust converter. Plan to coat in rustoleum, texture, and then spatter paint this one. I have a replacement spare tire holder in the storage to stick in there as well.

Spent the next pile of hours sandblasting stuff from under the hood one piece at a time and then wire-wheeling the interior pans. Still need to patch two quarter size spots in front pans.

Got to get inside and redo all the seam sealer. Anyone have a product I can use like a caulking gun with? The stuff I have used before is in a can like icing....it was a good product, just messy as hell. Now for the bad news....the interior is trash.

After 6 months of listening to some dipshit in Georgia tell me 50 different reasons why it wasn’t done I drove to his shop, got the police, and the coward had his wife come let us in to retrieve my property...surprise, he tore the **** down, but never recovered anything. He must have told me a dozen times it was done. Now I have to decide if I want to deal with civil court since the trade was for a 383 core, intake and .030 pistons and everything to get it in his truck.

Buyer beware.

Got the fenders on. Still need to do some work up there to detail the k member. Will eventually have to get the new grill, but pinching pennies for a bit.

Piddled at the shop cleaning up yesterday. I have so much crap. Spent time blasting and painting. Going to clean and restore underhood harness. Trying to raise some cash for new Grille. No major work getting done after engine bay is sprayed. Trying to get custody of my daughter. May consider cutting the car loose before I finish.

Ok. Got the seam sealer put back in today along with some heavy mil plastic back on the doors in front and sides in rear. I need to Pull tank down and address anything I find back there, repair quarter rust, then I will seal trunk with a coat of rustoleum and then plan spatter paint to finish. Interior floor will be treated to sound deadener sprayed in and then Stealth sound proof before carpet replaced. I will pull down steering column, replace firewall seal, wiper pivot seals, and prep the interior for paint. Getting there.....
