I need to remove the windshield in my '92 Ram to do some work, and then reinstall the windshield. I've done late model cars that are basically glued in place, but old cars.... Never.

What tools do I need and what's the process, or where do I find the manual for the process? Can I pop the windshield out without needing a replacement gasket?

Thanks in advance!

I've ended up having to cut the gasket on them when they get that old (hard/brittle/ no longer pliable) and have to get new gasket. It's been a LONG TIME since I installed one of these though and all I'm hearing about is doom and gloom about how crappy the current replacement windshield gaskets are for these trucks. But I have 2 of them sitting here with the windshields out that I have to find a supplier of a good replacement windshield gasket for ..

How good are the Detroit Mucle Tech gaskets Don? I need to buy one for an 83 Ram, and was hoping they were good. And yes, it is probably best to cut the gasket, normally brittle, and hard rubber. Good luck with your project!

don't know. Im gonna have to find out on both my 83 (which is getting a '90 cab) and my 85. I've heard they resell "some" Precision brand weatherstrip (which I've also heard that some of which they offer, really aren't "precision made") and you can get those "right from the horses mouth" cheaper.... I know I've heard of problems when using current new replacement windshields as they're said to be thinner than original. Of which I've heard the same about A body ones. Even Steele rubber and (who's the other "big" resto weatherstrip company, I forget... Soff seal maybe?) resells some "Precision" stuff. as I remember Fairchild is pretty cheap and I've heard "you get what you pay for" with them though I've never used anything from them. I do have a set of wing window seal in the attic that came from Precision, that's the only thing I know of that I've ever gotten from them/ and haven't used it yet
I will say that I've bought 2 sets of HVAC box rebuild kits for the 80s trucks from DMT//and besides not including the foam for the doors that take foam inside the plenum, what they do provide has been great. (they'll tell you they don't have that particular foam) I had to wade thru Mc Master Carr's offerings and "guess" which one to pick, to replace the foam on the internal doors. I had 3 "factory AC" 80s truck HVAC boxes from which I was able to get 2 complete "good" boxes from the 3 (the 3rd had a bad housing due to what I believe was "rough handling",,,, yanking and pulling while forgetting a hidden retaining fastener somewhere/ and maybe a little rough handling during its "shelf life". All 3 boxes I started with, the foam on the same door was disintegrated and "shot".
On the now crushed and (probably) recycled into a Toyota original 83 D250 cab, I replaced the door weatherstrip probably 15 years ago (don't remember the brand, something Id gotten from Ebay) that did the job.... the only markings I do remember from that job was that the weatherstrip being marked "made in India. and wondering if they ran out of ink and it was really supposed to have said "made in IndiaNA"....

That 90 cab is getting ready for body shop jail real soon and while its being held hostage I got some investigating to do as I need ALL the weatherstrip for that cab and doors....
I had a thread somewhere (moparts or Ramcharger central I believe) a while back trying to see "who was good" and "who to stay away from" for weatherstripping that truck will need.... I dont want to pay Cadillac money if I'm gonna get lowly Yugo grade parts anyway no matter who they may come from......... this may be a case where one company makes all the windshield rubber sold by all brands, the jury is still out. Ill let you know when I find something out, you do the same.

Thanks for the suggestions. It honestly hadn't occurred to me to get a gasket before I start, and I do NOT want a crappy gasket on this truck.

Once I have a gasket, what's the process? The rubber on it seems pretty compliant. This truck has always been sheltered from the sun.
