Depends...both are good engines. Almost identical, give and take a few details. Stroke and HP.

Depends on what you're doin. The short stroke 170 can be a killer bee in the right circumstance. They rev QUICK and get into their torque band right now.

For an all around driver I like the 170 .I have been driving one in my wagon since the 90's with a 4 speed behind it and a 323 7 1/4 sure grip . Like Rusty says , they wind right up fast and I love the fact that I get around 24 MPG out of it.

On the practical side, the heavier the car your putting it in the more appropriate the 225 becomes. In the early "A"'s I drive ('60-'62 just over 2800#'s) the 170 does very well for all the reasons other posters mentioned. If your body is a heavier '75 Duster with air, power brakes and steering, the 225 is probably the better choice for a typical city driving cycle.

I dont hear many people talk about the 198 /6. I know it was only made for a handful of years - is that why it doesn't get mentioned in discussions like this one? (just curious)

Just hard to find a 198. Most of them have been picked for the longer con rods and cranks for 170 stroker combinations. And a lot of people might not even know they have a 198 in their car!
              IMO.

I remember seeing one or two in the junk yards way back i the 90's. Definitely more 225's out there. I have not seen many 170's in my travels though!

I agree with Hyperpak, these days I rarely come across 198's, in cars or in junk yards.

For me it would be 225 all day with 3.55 gears. A 170 I would run some 3.91 gears and let it rev up like a raped ape.

Wishing they gave us 1 more to pick from
The 265 that Australian cars had.

And I am wishing I could find a 198 to pirate the good parts from. Actually the 198 and 225 block was the same, find a 225 crank with the 198 block, and 198 rods, and the 2.2 pistons.

I listed some 2.2 pistons in the for sale section today. A new set of 6.

Too late for this build for me
Got a set of 198 rods to send along with those? :wtf:
