Looking for some recommendations from the 'Experts'.....

Car.....Valiant {Approximately #2800 lbs.}

* 273 bored +.040"
* Flat-Top Cast Piston w/4-Valve Relief Notches
* Block has been decked to 'Zero'
* Compression Ratio.......{9.7-1}........'Approximate'

* Cylinder Heads (1967 Closed-Chamber #2685920}
* 1.84" Intake Valve ~ 1.50" Exhaust Valve
* Ported and Polished
* CFM Flow 210 @ .500 " Lift
* Milled {Combustion Chamber @ 55 CC Level}

* 'Weiand' Intake #8007 'Action-Plus' {Dual-Plane High Rise}

* Holley #4777 {650 CFM} Double-Pumper w/Mechanical Secondaries

* Block Hugger Short Headers {1 5/8" Port} {2.5" Exhaust Pipe Network}

* Gears {3.55 Sure-Grip}

* Transmission {A-904} with Trans-Go 'Stage 2' Shift Kit

* Torque Converter {3500 RPM Stall}
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Will this combination work as a 'Street Runner'

Any Camshaft Suggestions...........:coffee2:

Im running a 340 magnum camshaft with hydraulic lifters in my 273 commando engine!! Geof

ToolManMike,,,,,,,,

The 'Friend' wants to go the way of a 'Solid Lifter'.

With a 3500 RPM Stall Converter, but with 3.55 Gears....

Any suggestions, or is this a bad combination for the Street with a 273.

I like your Dual Energy grind RRR. Just doing a quick search of the off the shelf solids, nothing appealed to me. I know the stall speed will cover some issues, but.....it's still only 273 cubes with 3.55 gears.

Just my thought on this, and I could be way off base, but these numbers come to mind on a solid...........

.490 lift
224*@.050 intake
232*@.050 exhaust
Cut on a 110* LSA
Int. close @ 60*ABDC

Not sure if anything ground fits that criteria, just what came to me...lol. Comments welcome. :D

Rusty-Rat-Rod,

Good Suggestion....

XS-274S

Looks very good with .502"/.511" Lift and {.016"/.018" Lash}

Duration = 274*/280*
Duration = 236"/242* @ .050" Lift

LSA.......... 110*
CL............ 106*

Good Range = 2200-6200 RPM

Works well with a 2800 RPM Stall Converter.

Note; Will Piston's most likely require 'valve notching' with the specifications I posted.

Note; Is the 'Holley 650' Double-Pumper too much Carburetor for the Automatic.

This is my current setup in my Duster.

273 Commando - 1965
Cam: Comp Cams Magnum 282S - 282/282 Lift 495/495 (solid)
Edelbrock D4B intake / Edelbrock 600 Performer Carb
Pertronix Ignitor & Flame Thrower coil
Hooker Headers
2.5" Dual Exhaust / Super 44 Flowmaster
8 3/4 - 3.55 - SureGrip
727 auto / Shift Kit
10" 3000 stall converter
B&M Quicksilver Shifter

That cam works very well for me. I'm really happy with it. Before that cam I had the same setup but a hydralic 340 cam 268/276 duration and 429/444 lift. That worked good too, but the new one was a big improvement in every department. Better bottom, better midrange and way more rpm.

Just my experience and 2 cents. Good luck!

Don't the pistons have valve notches already? If they do, that's adequate I am sure. Of course I would still check as a means of good assembly.

Remember, it's the duration you need to worry about regarding clearance, not lift. It's how long the valve hang open. That cam is pretty mild. I don't think you'll have an issue.

A nice little stick in a solid XS 268s nice lope,.Duration @.050 lift 230-236 runs well with a 2500-3000 stall min 3.55 rear end.

67 gt I think you mean adv. duration. Otherwise the cam you suggested is huge

The cam that Rusty picked sounds like lots of fun! Here's a old school grind from Isky that could work well with the combo:
B-777 Strong mid-range perf. Lopey idle. 2500 RPM stall. 3.70-4.11 axle ratio. 650-750 CFM Carb. 10.5:1 compr. RPM-Range (3000-7000) Valve Lift (.480 .480) Valve Lash hot (.018 .018) ADV Duration (280 280) .050 Duration (240 240) LC 108

Yes, I know about Duration and Valve-to-Piston contact.

Unfortunately, I don't have the Engine Assembly to 'check-the-specs'.

Just trying to get a good Cam Combination with 3.55 Gears and a
3500 RMP Stall Converter for a 273 with a 904 Transmission.

I don't think it can be done for a Daily Driver/Street Machine,
as the internals of the 'not built' 904 will end up splattered all
over the road in a short period of time.

Plus the Piston Assembly
* Cast Piston Weight.....530 Grams
* Heavy Piston Pin........220 Grams
* Connecting Rod.........726 Grams

Reciprocating weight looks a bit too much.........

You need to keep in mind that when comparing solids to hydraulics, subtract 10* from the duration of the solid, because a comparable hydraulic acts about 10* bigger than a comparable solid. So if you want a solid that is about the same as a hydraulic with say, 230* @ .050, you need to choose a solid that's about 240* @ .050 to be about the same.

Is there enough flow from the heads in that combo to allow that cam to work at its peak.

Just a thought.

Mike,

I tried to locate that 'Old Profile' for the UltraDyne Camshaft.

No Luck.

.485" Lift / 272* Duration

Lash @ .026"

Good 'Street & Light-Strip' Numbers.....

Locate it where? Ultradyne is gone. Bullet cams ended up with some of their grinds and at least one Lunati VooDoo grind is an Ultradyne carryover.

This cam was a custom grind I had done back in about 1995. It never went in an engine. I sold the car before the project went anywhere.

The only one I know of is sitting in my garage in a box. PM me if you're interested.

Lil' Cuda,

I know UltraDyne has long been extinct.

I just wanted to check the '272 F10 Specs' again, to confirm the .026" Lash.

You know, the Cam Card was 'hand-written'..........Just wanted to double-check
the 'numbers' like you should always do........
