I'm starting page and will be posting pics and info building my 273 commando. This engine I'm using is an original engine with 70K miles on it . Has the oem high compression pistons with a standard bore . I will be installing my closed chamber 920 heads, headers , ld340 intake and a custom grind isky T-3 solid cam that was just ordered 455 lift 260 adv duration.
I have a question as this build procedes >>>
What would be the difference in compression if I were to use the oem steel shim head gasket at 10.5:1 vs. the mr gasket 1121g Head Gasket; Flexible Graphite Core; Elastomer Coated; 4.140 in. Gasket Bore; 0.028 in. Compressed Thickness .028 thick . Since the bore of 4.14 is quite large for the 3.65 oem bore , I would loose some compression . Can anyone tell me what would be approx loss by using the 4.14 gasket bore .

The LD340 wont match the ports of the 920 and will hurt the power you are trying to make.

Yes , I know what you mean . But that is what the engine cam with. I do have a stock 4 barrel intake that I could modify if need be. At least it would have the same ports.
DOES ANYONE WHAT TO DO A TRADE/SWAP FOR A LD4B INTAKE ??

I remember reading an article about a 273 running the stock intake and it was making some good HP.

closed chambered heads wont fit those 4bbl pistons with a shim head gasket. Measure before you bolt on.

273's had closed chamber heads from factory, also mopar used oem 0.21 steel shim gasket from factory . and mr. gasket is .028 . why won't they fit ?

273 Commando pistons are above deck pistons, you're closed chamber heads will interfere. You'll require really thick head gaskets or open chamber heads like the heads that came with that motor originally. 65'

1965 commando's had closed chamber 315 heads and steel shim head gaskets, That's what I read from other posts.
from another post >> 273 4-Barrel Thin Head Gasket {.021" thickness}
Original Part #2463 338
General Information

Near impossible to find a set of Original {.020"} Thin-Steel Head Gaskets {#2463 338} for the 273 4-Barrel.

But, if you dig a little, you can find a set from the 1968 318 {#2806 984}, {.020" thickness} which are designed for the 3.91" Bore.

Or possibly.

1969 Part #2951 259 {.028" thickness}
1970 Part #2946 082 {.028" thickness}
another post >>> The steel shim gasket wasn't just on the 4 barrel 273...they used on the 2bbl as well...big blocks had 'em too. That's what they used back then.

That's correct, I'm not certain if there's a difference between the 315 head combustion chamber cc's and the 920 head combustion chamber cc's. 65'

OK, its just good practice if they are not the original heads and gaskets. I get the 4bbls were used with same heads but Ive seen open and closed heads come off a 273.

same chambers , 920's flowed better , and 315 had the joofy intake bolt angle .

Yes ,that is good practice to check all those things for sure .

What is the flow difference between the 2 years? Any numbers?

Didn't know the 920's had the same combustion chamber volume and flowed better. The early 273 does have a different bolt angle. 65'

Small Block Cylinder Heads

CC's / Port Volume / Size / Flow

1966 - 1967 {273} Casting #2658920

Heart-Shaped Combustion Chamber

Factory CC Level..........................62.0 to 65.5 CC's
Recommended Minimum CC's......57.3 CC's

Intake Port Gasket Size...............1.05" x 2.07"
Exhaust Port Gasket Size.............1.14" x 1.59"

Intake Valve................................1.78"
Exhaust Valve..............................1.50"

Intake Bowl Size.........................1.53" {86% of Valve}

Intake Port.................................125 CC
Exhaust Port...............................61 CC

Intake Flow...............................160 CFM @ .450" Lift
Exhaust Flow.............................107 CFM @ .450" Lift

Intake-to-Exhaust Flow.............64.8%

Cool, How do those numbers compare to the 315 or 080 heads of 65?

The 920's did not have a larger intake valve stock. I read that somewhere and said, "I dont think so Tim"
Page 3 of the 66 D-Dart TSB states "standard valves" in the valve grind spec section.

I'd swap a D4B for an LD340. Are you still wanting to do that?

so the 315 and the 920 have identical port sizes. Probably the same head with a different bolt angle, Im wondering if the data was on 2 different test benches.

And both are listed as having the same closed combustion chamber. 57-64.5 cc's. The #675 head (3 different part numbers) were open chambered and had chamber cc's between 60 and 67/5 cc according to the Larry Shepard book.

Here is way too much data from Stan Weiss' Cylinder heads Stan Weiss' - Cylinder Head Flow Data at 28 Inches of Water -- DFW / FLW Flow Files for use with Engine Simulation Software

website has nice table, you'll have to work on this one.

Lots of good info there but I don't see any 273 heads on the list unless I missed them.

The Galen parts book lists the
#315 head as a 64-65 head with 1.78/ 1.50 valves and a closed chamber #080 head as a 64-65 head with 1.78/ 1.50 valves and a closed chamber
#178 head as a 1966 head with 1.78/ 1.50 valves and a closed chamber (early)
#234 head as a 1966 head with 1.78/ 1.50 valves and a closed chamber (late)
#920 head as a 1966 head with 1.87/ 1.50 valves and a closed chamber (273-4 with CAP)
#951 head as a 1966 head with 1.87/ 1.50 valves and a closed chamber (D Dart)
#920 head as a 66-67 273 and 67 318 with 1.78/ 1.50 valves and a closed chamber
In 1968 the 273/318 heads went to a open chamber with the same 1.78/ 1.50 valves

I have a set of #920's but without matching the part number I don't know what they came off of. I doubt if they are the 1.87 intake valve heads.

Toolmanmike and others can you answer this question >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Are steel shim head gaskets made of embossed steel like they are described as or are they made with a composite material like felpros?
I've seen a pair on the internet saying they were the steel shim gaskets but they looked like they were composite like felpros. this image is for a 273 head gasket and it does not look like a steel shim gasket at all . what gives?
maybe some you have torn apart these engine over the years can tell us what is suppose to be installed from the factory , steel metal shim or composite ?
