Why is the rear main bearing in my 1964 273 wider than the replacement from clevis

Which one? There are 5 of them. Knowing position is helpful.
see the title! Am assuming from the title that’s it’s the rearmost bearing!

Clevite/Mahle? What replacement main being part number set do you have? There are 2-3 sets that fit the 273/318/340 journals, and the MS540 series set has a slightly wider #5 main bearing, wider by about .050". They list the MS540 series as being for the 273; our 273 stock came with the wider bearing.
If you were to try the narrower one, I'd place it in the saddle and cap and make sure the 2 halves line up with each other. The locating tabs may be differently located. And see how the bearing lines up on the journal surface, and the groove(s) relative to any oil hole in the journal.
